Middle school news

The Tamaqua Area Middle School will host its annual Spring Art Show and Choral Concert on May 5.

The annual art show will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. and will feature a variety of artistic creations done by students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. In addition to individual works, there will also be several group projects featured.

In an effort to make it easier and more convenient for people in the Tamaqua area to lose weight, Weight Watchers of Philadelphia Inc. has announced it is opening a new meeting location in the Scheller Student Center on the Morgan Center campus of Lehigh Carbon Community College. The initial session is scheduled for April 26 at 11:30 a.m. Express Meeetings will then be held every Tuesday, from noon to 1 p.m.

The Tamaqua Street Department will continue its Spring cleaning of the borough's streets. Sweeping on Thursdays and Fridays will continue to have a start time of 5 an effort to minimize traffic disruptions on the borough's mani streets, with all other days' operations scheduled to begin at 7 a.m.

This week's schedule will include: Wednesday, the sweeper will be found on Mountain Ave., Greenwood to Clark; Swatara, Van Gelder to Mahanoy; South Nescopec, Van Gelder to Mahanoy; Cottage Ave., Center to RT209; Nescopec, Franklin to West Elm.

Board of health

The Tamaqua Board of Health held its April meeting with Randolph Gormley, Earl Boettger, James Gormley, Shirley Becker and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.

Barron reported making seven spot check inspections during March: Tamaqua Area High School, Tamaqua Area Middle School, Tamaqua Area Elementary School, Broad Street Deli, Subway Inc., Fegley's Mini Mart and the Tamaqua Community Center. He also received and adjusted seven complaints: five for scattered rubbish/garbage; one for lack of hot water; and one infestation.

Look Good, Feel Better

The American Cancer Society will host a Look Good, Feel Better makeover workshop from 4-6 p.m., April 18, at the Simon Kramer Institute, 15 Alliance St., New Philadelphia.

The session is free and open to all local female cancer patients actively undergoing cancer treatment.

During the session, trained cosmetologists will meet with patients to discuss ways of using makeup and accessories to minimize appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Pool passes

Applications are now available for season passes to the H.D. Buehler Memorial (Bungalow) Pool. Opening day will be June 4, at 11:30 a.m. No season or daily passes will be available that day.

Steeply discounted rates for Tamaqua Area School District residents are made available through the generosity of the John E. Morgan Foundation and rates remain the same as last summer.

Kindergarten news

The Tamaqua Area School District will have a make up day for kindergarten registration for the 2011-2012 school year. The district is offering this opportunity to parents/guardians of kindergarten age children who missed the March session.

The make up day will be held May 24. To schedule an appointment, call (570) 668-3306, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m.

DARE graduation

DARE graduation will be held April 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held in the Tamaqua Middle School Auditorium.

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile held March 30 collected a total of 49 units of the "gift of life," held at the Tamaqua Salvation Army Center on West Broad Street.

Multi-gallon pins were awarded to Wendy Shlanta, two gallons, and Carl Heisler, 10 gallons.

Volunteers included Jack Quinn, Bob Zeplin, Jack Rarick, Joe Rimm, Randy Gormley, Bob and Dolly Shirey, Ardis Gerhard, Edie Hoffman and Robert and Darlene Zeckman.

This visit was sponsored by Bowe, Lisella and Bowe, attorneys at law.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its first regular meeting of 2011 in the social hall of Zions Church, Lewistown Valley. The business session was conducted by President June Leiby. Special guest speaker was Dr. Joseph Sabol.

Class of 1943

The Tamaqua High School Class of 1943 is planning a 68-year anniversary reunion for this summer. The event will be held June 18 at the Owl Creek Reservoir and will include a picnic style luncheon.

Rush bloodmobile

The Rush Township Bicentennial Committee will sponsor an American Red Cross Bloodmobile on April 5, from 1-6 p.m., at the township municipal building.
