School lunches

Due to a federal mandate, the Tamaqua Area School District has raised the price of a school lunch for the 2011-2012 school year. As of Aug. 30, the cost of a school lunch will be $2.30 at the senior high and middle schools, and $2.05 at the district's three elementary schools.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Aug. 11 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club for an annual picnic. The 82 members in attendance enjoyed a meal catered by Christy Joy.

Board of Health

The August meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the municipal building with Randolph Gormley, James Gormley, Earl Boettger, Shirley Becker, Health Officer Judith Hadesty R.N. and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Aug. 4 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 86 members in attendance.

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and read the secretary's report. Rose Valle provided the invocation, entitled "Whose Flowers Are These." Vice President Doris Brobst announced Dolores Boyle and Jean Yanick were added to the sick list. Dolores Walck provided the treasurer's report.

A dance benefit for kids in grades 4 through 8 for Sharon (McCarroll) Goho will be held Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Tamaqua Community Center. DJ Big Show will be providing entertainment. The donations are $5. There will also be soda and snacks available for purchase.

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is holding a free concert today, with performance by Wildcat, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of their Summer Concert Series. The concert will be held on the platform of the Tamaqua Railroad Station. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Rush taxes

The office of Rush Township Tax Collector Dolores Walck will be closed Aug. 16, from 9-11 a.m.

The office will be open that day from 6-8 p.m.

Additionally, as stated on the tax bills, the office will be closed on Aug. 9-10.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery care is provided. Sunday school classes meet at 9:30 a.m.

A free movie in the park will be played tonight starting at 8:30 p.m. at the East End Park, Mountain Avenue, in Tamaqua. The concession stand will also be open. The movie will be Secretariat, rated PG. The movie is provided courtesy of the East End Park Association.

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile visited Tamaqua on July 20, collecting 48 units of the "gift of life." Two first time donors, Deanna Hill and Olga Rosado, participated.

Local volunteers assisting Red Cross personnel were Jean Stevens, Dolly Shirey and Bob Shirey. The Salvation Army gym was transformed into a blood collection center through the efforts of Randy Gormley, Bob Zeplin, Jack Quinn, Mike Trubilla and Joe Rimm.

This visit was sponsored by the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

Tamaqua's annual Sidewalk and Community Yard Sale, organized by the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce, will be held tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or later. The yard sale and sidewalk locations are listed in today's TIMES NEWS or can be picked up at the Chamber office today before 5 p.m. or during the sale, 114 West Broad Street.
