Adult Day Care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for November, including a canned good drive to benefit the Salvation Army Food Pantry. Donations may be taken to the center, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Other activities for the month will include: Nov. 2, bingo; Nov. 4, sandwich day; Nov. 7, craft day; Sept. 11, musical entertainment with Audrey Christ; Nov. 16, Salvation Army service; Nov. 17, cooking class; Nov.18, Christmas shopping trip; Nov. 29, visit from St. Jerome's kindergarten class; Nov. 30, show and tell.

Rush bicentennial

The Rush Township Bicentennial Community Day has been rescheduled for Oct. 30.

The special event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rush Township Municipal Building.

Festivities will include appearances by WMGH radio personalities Polka Joe Manjack and Ann Marie Calabrese, historical exhibits, business displays and giveaways, St. Luke's health screenings, face painting, coloring and free refreshments and door prizes.

The public is welcome to attend.

Preceptor news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held its last meeting at the home of Cathy Santee. The program included a demonstration by Santee on her dog, Jackson's, first place win at obedience school.

During the business session, members discussed an upcoming Thanksgiving-themed visit to the Geriatric Center at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital in Coaldale. Also, final orders were taken for the Cake Pans by Karen fundraiser and reservations were accepted for the Oct. 29 dinner theatre event at Park View Inn, Summit Hill.

Garden club

The South Schuylkill Garden Club will meet Nov. 15, at 6:30 p.m., at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Dock Street, Schuylkill Haven. The evening will include a presentation from Helen Moyer, who will demonstrate holiday designs for the home, using festive greens.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Oct. 11 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 48 members in attendance.

President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting.

Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker, who also offered inspirational readings. Birthday greetings were extended to Louise Horn.

A date was set for the annual Christmas party. It will be held Dec. 13 at the Ryan Township Fire Company. Christy Joy will be the caterer.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Oct. 13 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 78 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business meeting and offered readings.

Rose Valle provided the invocation, entitled "This Land Is Ours." Secretary Joan Ann Garber and Vice President Doris Brobst provided reports. Gladys Weaver was added to the sick list and it was announced that Isabelle Brode is recuperating at home.

Upcoming events include a Chinese Auction on Oct. 27; pizza party sometime in November; Christmas party on Dec. 8, catered by Christy Joy.

South Ward news

Halloween on the Hill will return to the South Ward Playground this year. The Spooktacular event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29 and is being sponsored jointly by the South Ward Playground Association and the South Ward Neighborhood Committee. The day's activities will include a costume/baby/pet parade, bobbing for apples, a peanut scramble, games and a haunted maze.

Rain date will be Oct. 30.

BPW anniversary

The Tamaqua Business and Professional Women's Club celebrated its 64th anniversary with a dinner at La Dolce Casa as part of the regular October meeting.

Special guests were members of the Schuylkill Haven BPW and the Pottsville BPW.

President Phyllis Paisley was in charge of the celebration and meeting.

Entertainment was provided by Eileen Maiser.

The service organization,as part of its effort to provide advocacy, education and information, collected socks to donate the state Make A Difference Day Project.

Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority will meet today at the home of Cathy Santee.

Cake pan orders will be due at this meeting.

The chapter met Sept. 30 at the home of Donna Sterling.

Wanda Keefer was welcomed back after a lengthy leave of absence.

During the business session, topics of discussion included information on personalized cake pans; cookie baking to send to service members for Christmas; and a dinner theater outing on Oct. 29

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 in the Tamaqua Elementary School Library.

The membership drive will continue through Oct. 31. Membership in the organization is required in order to participate in school functions.

The Raider Run will be held Oct. 14. The public is welcome to attend and support the students.

Last day for School Spirit orders will be Oct. 17.

The Rush Elementary Book Fair will be held Oct. 17-23. Family Night will be Oct. 19, from 6-8 p.m., in the Rush Elementary School Library.
