Parenting help

A free, six-week parenting class will begin Thursday in Tamaqua.

"Caring Corners," a program designed by psychologist Dr. Kevin Lehman, will be held at the South Ward Community Center on each of the next six Thursdays.

Sessions will begin at 7 p.m.

Using Dr. Lehman's best selling book "Have a New Kid By Friday," leaders will provide tips on changing children's attitudes, behavior and character. Parents will gain an understanding of why children act the way they do, how they may be encouraging bad behavior and ways to make changes.

D.A.R.E.

The Tamaqua Area D.A.R.E. Challenge will be held March 1 in the Tamaqua Elementary School gym. There will be two sessions, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m.

Volunteers will be needed for the event, as well as for set up and clean up.

The gym will be set up from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, and at 8:30 a.m. that Saturday. Clean up will be done after the challenge, from 4 to 6 p.m.

D.A.R.E. graduation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 10 in the Tamaqua Middle School Auditorium.

Healthy living

A "Living a Healthy Life" series will be held in Tamaqua beginning on March 6. The six-week series, designed to help people with chronic illness, will be held at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays.

The sessions are also open to caregivers, spouses, family members and the general public. Participants will learn ways to improve healthful behavior, health status and help reduce hospital stays.

Veterans help

A representative from the Disabled American Veterans will be available once a month at Tamaqua Borough Hall to offer free veteran's claim service for veterans as well as widows and dependent children of veterans. Information and assistance will be provided for service connected disability claims, low income pension, health care claims for service connected disabilities and low income veterans and other questions concerning veterans' benefits.

Book fair

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization's annual Spring Book Fair will be held from Feb. 24 through Feb. 28 at the Tamaqua Elementary School on Boyle Avenue. Family night is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25.

In case of snow, family night will be held from 6 to 7:30 Wednesday.

Available books will be on display in the school library

The public is welcome to attend.

Safe web surfing

The Tamaqua Safety Initiative and Live the Green Dot Tamaqua will sponsor a presentation on social networking and Internet safety on March 6.

The mini seminar will be held from 6:30to 8 p.m. at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St.

The program will be presented by Janene Holter of the state attorney general's office. It is designed to educate while stressing the importance of keeping children safe when they are online. Due to some of the subject material, students who have not reached seventh grade will not be permitted to attend.

Time of healing

The Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network will sponsor a Service of Healing and Hope in response to last week's difficult times, which included the loss of a Tamaqua woman in a reported homicide, the deaths of a husband and wife in an accident.

The ecumenical healing service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, 223 E. Broad St. Snow date is 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The public, especially anyone dealing with a loss, is welcome to attend.

Adult Day Care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for February, including a special Valentine's Day breakfast on Feb. 14.

Other activities for the month include: Feb. 7, musical entertainment by Tanya; Feb. 12, craft day; Feb. 13, manicures; Feb. 19, Salvation Army service: Feb. 24, cooking class; Feb. 25, a day of reminiscing; Feb. 26, sing a long with Audrey Christ; Feb. 27, visit from St. Jerome's kindergarten class; Feb. 28, visit from the foot doctor.

Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Jan. 30 with 60 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "Leave It To the Lord."

Reports were offered by secretary Ruth Ann Feane and treasurer Penny Schlorf. Rose Eick was added to the sick list and new member Gregg Barron was given a warm welcome

Relay for Life

The Relay for Life for Tamaqua and surrounding communities will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St. The main topic for discussion will be the upcoming Power of Purple event.

Organizers encourage all committee members, team captains and anyone interested in the fight against cancer to attend.

School taxes

The Tamaqua Area School District is accepting Assessed Occupation Tax exemption applications for the 2014-2015 school year. This will cover the 2014 calendar year. This year's forms are orange.
