Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Dec. 12 at the home of Wanda Keefer, who presented an informative program on the possible harmful ingredients sometimes found in daily care products. Members learned what to look for on the labels of items including hand lotions, lipsticks and shampoo.

Following the business meeting, a Secret Sister gift exchange was held, followed by a buffet meal provided by the hostess and her daughter, Brie.

Financial aid

The Tamaqua Area High School Guidance Department will sponsor an informational Financial Aid Night on Jan. 16. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and be held in the district auditorium.

The 2013-2014 Financial Aid form will be reviewed and general financial aid questions will be answered. Junior and senior class students planning to further their education, as well as their parents, are welcome to attend.

No preregistration or fee is required.

Soup social

Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St., will host an outreach soup social from 4-6 p.m. Saturday as part of its monthly "Feeding the Hungry" program. The public is welcome to attend and share in the free soup, friendship and God's love.

Garden club news

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its annual Christmas party in the social hall of Zions Church, Lewistown Valley. In lieu of a gift exchange, members donated to a local charity. Outgoing president June Leiby conducted a short business session.

Tax exemptions

The Schuylkill County and Tamaqua Borough Per Capita and Occupation Tax Exemption Forms for the year 2014 will become available on Monday for Borough of Tamaqua residents.

The exemption forms can be obtained at the Tamaqua Municipal Building, 320 E. Broad St., from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Forms will also be available at tax collector Alan Kerr's office, the Tamaqua Area School District Administration building, the Tamaqua ABC High Rise, Majestic House Apartment Complex, the Tamaqua Public Library and the Tamaqua Post Office.

TAHS athletes

The athletic department of the Tamaqua Area School District is interested in forming a Tamaqua Area Athletic Alumni Association. An organizational meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 9, in room 108 of the Tamaqua Area Senior High School.

All former athletes, coaches and friends of TAHS athletics are welcome to attend. The first 40 people in attendance will receive a free TAHS thumb drive.

Goodwill drive

Tamaqua area Girl and Boy Scouts plans to sponsor a donation drive to benefit the Keystone Area Goodwill last weekend had to be postponed due to a snow storm. The scouts have rescheduled the event, which will be held from noon until 2 p.m., this Saturday, at St. John United Church of Christ, 150 Pine St., Tamaqua.

Scholarship offer

Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society is offering a $500 educational scholarship to one qualified woman in Schuylkill County. Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: must be female with a primary residence in Schuylkill County; currently enrolled in college with a major in education; and must have competed at least one year of college with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. held its annual Christmas party on Dec. 10 at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville. The 50 members in attendance enjoyed a meal catered by C.J. Catering of Mahanoy City.

The tables were decorated with poinsettia plants, donated by Hub and Shirley Becker. Everyone in attendance received mittens and candy canes, courtesy of Doris Brobst. Several door prizes were donated, including a lap blanket from Nancy Godanis, a table runner by Eleanor Schmerfeld and a lamp, donated by Ron and Lynne Creitz.

Tamaqua area Girl and Boy Scouts are sponsoring a donation drive to benefit the Keystone Area Goodwill. The event will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John United Church of Christ, 150 Pine St., Tamaqua.

Coat drive

The Tamaqua Area High School Blue and White staff is sponsoring a winter warmth drive. Students are collecting lightly used winter coats, jackets, hats, scarves and gloves, as well as similar new items, to benefit children in need.

Collection boxes have been placed in the all of the school district buildings, including the administration office. Donated items will be placed with deserving students in all grades. Any items not given to students will then be donated to the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

Deadline for donations will be Dec. 16.
