Celebrating

the holidays

The Western Pocono Lioness Club held its December meeting/holiday party at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert, Dec. 21.

Among the activities was a gift exchange game some call: "Now you have it, now you don't," and charades dealing with holiday songs and movies. Refreshments included a variety of treats.

The group will not meet again until Feb. 22, weather permitting.

An upcoming event in which the club will participate is Pleasant Valley School District's A Night of Unity, set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 2.

Salem United Church of Christ

On Friday, Dec. 24, Christmas Eve Services will be held at Salem UCC, located behind the Turkey Hill in Gilbert, with a traditional service at 6:30 p.m. and a contemporary service at 8 p.m. All are welcome.

Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church

SSP will be holding Christmas Eve services on Friday, Dec. 24 at 4:30, 7 and 10 p.m. Join them for communion, carols, and candlelight. SSP is handicap accessible and is located on Trach Drive in Kresgeville.

Special guest

Members of the Western Pocono Lions Club had a holiday party as their meeting for December. A special guest was Jorge Rivas who spoke about his camp experience at Beacon Lodge. The club had sponsored Rivas' attendance.

Citing the friends he made, the activities that were available, and how good it was to be with others who are also visually impaired, Rivas volunteered to go back any time the club wanted. He also played his trumpet for the group.

Sounds of the Season

This weekend marked the annual holiday production of the Pleasant Valley Choral Society in the Pleasant Valley High School auditorium.

The group of over 30 voices, under the direction of Dorothy Mohr, remembered deceased member George W. Prosser Jr. of Appenzell as they dedicated the program to him. They were accompanied by Tom Salmon and junior accompanist, Amanda Breidenbach.

Chorus concert

Pleasant Valley Intermediate School's fifth grade will have its chorus concert on Monday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All are welcome to attend.

Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church

SSP will be hanging the greens for Christmas on Saturday, Dec 18 at 12:30 p.m.

If you would like to decorate the church for Christmas, bring a dish for the potluck dinner which will be held at noon in the church's dining room downstairs.

Santa Claus visits Eldred

Santa Claus is coming to Eldred Township on Saturday, Dec. 18. from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Bring a camera for pictures with Santa.

Please bring a nonperishable food item for the Ecumenical Network.

Christmas cantata

Dan Smale has put together a Christmas cantata with the help of almost 70 singers from St. Matthew's, Effort UMC and Our Lady Queen of Peace. Enjoy the music of the season on Friday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Matthew's, Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at Effort UMC and Our Lady Queen of Peace Sunday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m.

Family Fun Night

Pleasant Valley Elementary will have a family fun night on Friday, Dec. 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All students of PVE and their families are welcome to attend.

Pleasant Valley Intermediate School news

PVI will hold its 6th grade band concert on Friday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. The 7th grade band concert will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 14, also at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

The PVI PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 4:15 p.m. in the school library.

The West End Rotary will welcome Kevin Knoll as speaker at the club's Thursday, Dec. 9, 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting at the Western Pocono Community Library. Knoll will speak about AFLAC.

Financial aid

The Pleasant Valley High School cafeteria is where a Financial Aid Night will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Tree lighting

The annual Chestnuthill Christmas Tree lighting and visit from Santa Claus will take place from 6-8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10, at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Route 715.

St. Matthew's UCC will hold a Blue Christmas Service on Monday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. with communion.

Secret Sister luncheon

St. Matthew's will have its Secret Sister luncheon on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. If you are already a member, be sure to come and bring a covered dish. If you would like to be a member, also come and join up for next year. You do not have to be a member of the church.

Touchdown Club

A meeting for parents, grandparents and friends of the Jim Thorpe football program will be held on Monday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. in the commons area of the high school. Election of officers for the Touchdown Club will be held at the meeting, as well as the planning of the awards ceremony.
