Young at Heart Seniors

Young at Heart Seniors will meet at the Polk Township Fire Company meeting room on Tuesday, March 1 at 10:30 a.m. They will review the 2011 meeting schedule, as well as trip planning and other topics of interest to seniors. Dessert and hot drinks will be provided after the meeting. Members are reminded to bring a can or package of nonperishable food items for the food bank. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Good news

Jeff Weiss has recuperated from his accident enough to attend a meeting at the West End Firehouse. However, much healing is ahead of him according to fellow fire company members.

Tucker Irwin, formerly of Brodheadsville, where her husband Tom served as pastor of Zion Lutheran, has been moved from Good Shepherd in Bethlehem to a rehabilitation center in Reading, much closer to their home.

Volunteer meeting

An important meeting for volunteers of the free Sunday Supper at Our Lady Queen of Peace will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, in McCawley Hall.

Family Fun Night

Pleasant Valley Elementary will have a family fun night on Friday, Feb. 18 from 6-7:30 p.m in the school cafeteria. All students of PVE and their families are welcome to attend.

Polk PTO Meeting

Polk Elementary School will have a PTO Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. Parents of Polk students are invited to come and share their ideas. Baby sitting is available.

PV Elementary School PTO

The monthly PVE PTO meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All are welcome to attend.

Scout Sunday

Scouts were present at the 10:30 a.m. service at Effort UMC. The church hosts Pack, Troop and Crew 99.

At St. Peter's UMC in Saylorsburg, Troop 109 was scheduled to participate in the service.

Some churches celebrated Scout Sunday on Feb. 6.

Zion Seniors

The next meeting of the Zion Senior Citizens is set for 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 17. Part of the meeting will be focus on Valentine's Day and its history.

Historical society

The Eldred Township Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Eldred Township municipal building. They will be having a Show and Tell. You're invited to bring in an item that you think is interesting or has a history in your family.

St. Matthew's UCC

Everyone who is planning to attend St. Matthew's on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. is asked to wear red in celebration of St. Valentine's Day and love.

Sleigh riding at PVI

On Saturday, Feb. 19, bring your sled. The WEPOSC will be sponsoring sleigh riding at Pleasant Valley Intermediate School from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., weather permitting. There will be hot cocoa and treats. For more information, call (570) 992-9733.

Many served

Effort UMC's Supplemental Food Resource Center served over 20 families, totaling over 110 folks, this past Saturday even though the area had ice problems.

The current needs at the center are soup, corn, chili/stew, noodles (any kind), boxed potatoes, mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise.

The center is also looking for toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant.

Donations may be brought to the church during regular office hours.

50th birthday

Rick Miller was surprised last Sunday when he walked into the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Co. where many of his family and friends, including his first employer, Blaine Silfies and his wife, Nancy, were there to celebrate his 50th birthday. The theme was hunting. The tables were decorated with real deer antlers and evergreens. DJ Ernie Frantz kept the guests on their feet with many games with Rick as the star. His birthday is Feb. 6.

PVE Toys for Tots

The Toys for Tots drive held at Pleasant Valley Elementary was very successful this year. Approximately 1,200 toys were collected from PVE. The toys were distributed throughout all of Monroe County.

Thanks to all who donated toys and those who helped in any way.

Tax help begins

The West End AARP Tax Assistance Group from Lehighton has begun its work in the West End today, weather permitting at Salem UCC in Gilbert. Offered is free tax help for all ages, with special attention to seniors.

Federal, state and local taxes, as well as rent and property rebates will be completed.

Volunteers are there Monday and Thursday mornings, from 9 a.m. to noon.

If Pleasant Valley schools have a two-hour delay, the hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. to noon.
