Horseshoe winners

The St. Matthew's UCC's picnic was deemed a great success, thanks to all its volunteers and to all those who came out to support it.

The Horseshoe Tournament was an added feature this year and the winners were: Henry Krechel, singles and Bruce Pozza and Mark Bittenbender won doubles.

School will be opening on Monday, Aug. 27. Be extra careful as there will be kids on the road waiting for their school buses.

Open houses

Pleasant Valley Intermediate School 4th grade will have an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 4 from 6-8 p.m. PVI 5th grade will host their open house on Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 6-8 p.m. and 6th grade will have theirs on Thursday, Sept. 6, also from 6-8 p.m.

Guest preacher

Filling the pulpit at Effort UMC last Sunday for the Rev. Robin Fisher, who is on vacation, was the Rev. Lee Van Rensburg.

Originally from South Africa and now retired, he last served in New Jersey.

PV School Board

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 23 in the district office in Brodheadsville.

School opens

School begins in the Pleasant Valley School District Monday, Aug. 27. Drivers are reminded that traffic will be heavier mornings and afternoons.

Community clothing give-away

There will be a free community clothing give-away on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Towamensing Volunteer Fire Co. on Route 209. There will be infant, children's and men and women's clothing, shoes and coats available. You may fill a bag with clothing, free. This is Kunkletown's Hunter Diehl's senior project.

Youth Group

St. Matthew's UCC's Youth Group will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Safe Haven Pet Rescue

Safe Haven Pet Rescue is a small group of dedicated volunteers from the West End of the Poconos who save highly adoptable dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and finds them loving homes. Safe Haven needs volunteers to help with adoption days, transporting dogs to the vet and the groomers, and fostering homeless dogs until they find their forever home.

If you are an animal lover, they would love to meet you. Their next meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. at Cherry's Restaurant, on Route 209 in Kresgeville.

Sage will perform a free concert in the Chestnuthill Park, Route 715, Brodheadsville, from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19.

Donations needed

St. Matthew's UCC is looking for donations for a Chinese auction and cakes for a cake walk (adult and children's) for its picnic on Saturday, Aug. 18.

Chinese auction items can be dropped off at the church office Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or Sunday from 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Cakes can be dropped off in the picnic grove from 12 -5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18.

Eldred Township Historical Society

The Eldred Township Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Eldred Township municipal building.

Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church

The work schedule for this year's West End Fair Stand is posted on the community bulletin board and ready to be filled in. You must be 13+ years old to work in the stand.

If you are able to sign up for more than one shift, that would be great.

Volunteers will receive a free fair entry ticket for the day they are scheduled to work, plus a free meal. There are three shifts daily from Aug. 26 through Sept. 1, with five to six volunteers per shift.

West End Rotary

Mel Ludwig and students from the Pleasant Valley School District art program are scheduled to be the guests of the West End Rotary club this Thursday, Aug. 9. The club meets for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville.

At 7 a.m., the club will present a donation to Dolores Everitt of Girls on the Run.

The donation is from proceeds from the club's successful Bear Run and Fun Walk.

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company.
