Church celebrates anniversary

McMichaels UMC is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Bishop Peggy A. Johnson, the United Methodist Bishop for the Northeastern Methodist District, will be visiting and presenting the children's sermon and adult sermon at the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday. Holy Communion will be served by the bishop and the Rev. Ron Schane, who is escorting her. Coffee and doughnuts will be served after the worship.

Bible study

The Rev. Suzanne Brooks-Cope at St. Matthew's UCC will be starting a Bible study class on "Discovering the Bible" on Sept. 17. If interested, contact the church office so books can be ordered, 610-381-2442.

PVEN needs

Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is in need of school supplies, school clothes (especially uniforms), new socks (adult size) and new packaged underwear for boys and girls, all sizes.

They also need macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, cereal and all nonperishable food items.

Free backpack

The Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, just off Weir Lake Road, will hold a free back-to-school event from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6. The first 100 children will get a free backpack filled with school supplies.

Garden of Giving

The Garden of Giving in McMichaels is producing a bounty of crops, including fresh organic garlic, onions, cucumbers, green and fryer peppers, eggplant, parsley, basil, and also eggs. The fall crop will be ready for harvesting at the end of September through the fall.

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will not meet Thursday, April 28 because it's West End Fair week. They will meet again on Thursday, Sept. 11.

Keeping Sunday Holy

The ecumenical group, Keeping Sunday Holy, was formed to try to impact the community and create an awareness that Sundays are days for persons to reconnect with families after a busy week in school and work and to be nourished spiritually.

Church picnic

St. Matthew's UCC church picnic will be Saturday. The food stands will open at 3 p.m. There will be games, kiddie cake walk and fishing pond for the children.

Enter your favorite pie in the pie contest. There will be a horseshoe tournament, cake walk and The Hawks will provide entertainment.

Rain date is Sunday, Aug. 17.

Blood drive

A Miller-Keystone Blood Drive is held every Wednesday, from noon to 6 p.m., at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville. For an appointment call 1-800-223-6667. Walk-ins are welcome.

Women's club speaker

The Western Pocono Women's Club will honoring Jake Sarwar of Saylorsburg when it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Jake was the club's 2014 representative at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar in May and will be sharing his experiences at the meeting.

He is the son of Mohammad and Maria Sarwar of Saylorsburg.

The Family Table

The second Sunday of every month, St. Matthew's UCC holds a second worship service at noon called The Family Table featuring The Path, a live band led by Randy Cramer.

The Rev. Suzanne Brooks-Cope, pastor, leads the alternative worship service with communion for all.

The service features country, gospel and contemporary songs to lift your spirit and soothes your soul.

The Youth group will be serving brunch at 10:30 a.m.

The regular worship service is at 9 a.m.

Lions board meets

The Western Pocono Lions Club board of directors will meet at the Western Pocono Community Library at 7 o'clock tonight. All Lions are welcome.

At the club's July meeting, the speaker was from Family Promise of Monroe County. The organization helps homeless families get back into permanent housing with the help of area churches.

The club voted to give Family Promise a donation.

An American Red Cross blood drive is being held today, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert. Visit or call 1-800-RED CROSS to schedule an appointment if any are still available.

Rotary speaker

West End Rotary meets at 7:30 a.m. on Thursdays in the community room of the Western Pocono Community Library, Route 209 in Brodheadsville. This Thursday the club will hear a presentation by Dawn Daignault from the Human Resource Center in Effort.
