Vacation Bible School

St. Matthew's UCC's Vacation Bible School will be July 15-19 from 9-11:30 a.m. This year's program is "Athens: Paul's Dangerous Journey to Share the Truth." Call (610) 381-2442 to register.

Double winner

For the second consecutive year, Steve Sagala of Effort won the countywide Annual Senior Spelling Bee. Connie Pentz of East Stroudsburg won second place; and Linnae Cintron from Effort, Honorable Mention.

Rotary speaker

The West End Rotary Club will welcome Boy Scouts' Ken Ryno at its 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting, Thursday, June 6. He will speak about the Eagle's Nest Fund.

Laymen's accepting donations

St. Matthew's UCC's Laymen's Fellowship is now accepting donations of sugar, milk and Carnation Evaporated Milk to make homemade ice cream for the Strawberry Festival. They are also in need of raffle items and donations of cake for the strawberry shortcake. The recipe is available in the White Dove Flyer which can be accessed on the church's website at

Safe Haven Pet Rescue

Safe Haven Pet Rescue will have a volunteer meeting on Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. at Cherry's Family Restaurant, Route 209 near Route 534, Kresgeville.

Safe Haven is a small group of animal advocates who rescue dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and find them loving homes. All dogs are in foster care until their permanent homes are found.

Volunteers are needed for adoption days, dog transport to veterinary and grooming appointments, fundraising, clerical help, home visits and more. Foster homes are needed in order to save more dogs.

Free sports camp

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God, Brodheadsville, is holding a free sports camp for children ages Pre-K through sixth grade. Camp will run from 6-8:30 p.m. from June 23-27 at the church at 1 Warren Lane.

Crafts will be offered for Pre-K while sports will be offered to grades 1-6, including soccer, flag football, basketball and cheerleading.

Memorial Day

The Eldred Township Veterans Commission will hold a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 27 at 11 a.m. at the Eldred Township memorial, located in the front of the township's municipal building. Everyone is invited to attend to pay homage to all the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Cornerstone Community Church

Cornerstone Community Church invites the community to attend one of its Sunday Worship times of 8:30 a.m. or 11 a.m.

Summer worship times begin June 9 and are 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. The church provides nursery, toddler and preschool care all morning. Jr. Worship for ages K-Grade 3 and Preteen Zone for Grades 4-6 meets during the second service time.

To get to the church, from Route 209 in Kresgeville, turn north onto Burger Hollow Road. Turn left onto Polk Township Road. The church is located next to the Pleasant Valley Elementary School.

Purpose Driven Women

Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church hosts a Purpose Driven Women's meeting Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. It is a women's Bible study which includes: fun, laughter, and fellowship as participants learn to apply God's word in their lives.

District visitor

The Western Pocono Lions Club will meet on Wednesday at The Old Mill Pizza on Route 209 in Sciota today at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be a representative from District 14-U Global Membership Team.
