West End Missions is providing free meals to local needy families. It is a local non-profit organization created to help needy families in the area by providing them with food. Due to economic hardships, many families in the area find themselves without adequate resources for food. West End Missions is working to alleviate this problem. Beginning in July, West End Missions will be starting a nutritional program to serve a free dinner twice a week at the Salem United Church of Christ located on Gilbert Road, in Gilbert (behind the Turkey Hill at Route 209 and Gilbert Road).

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its June meeting at the social hall of Zion's Church, with President June Leiby in charge of the business session. Guest speaker was Kenny Fetherolf of Forget Me Not Florist at Pioneer Evergreen Farms.

Fetherolf introduced club members to the latest styles in bridal bouquets and wedding flowers, as well as traditional arrangements. He provided tips on choosing floral materials, bouquet sizes and flowers that last longest out of water. Each member in attendance was presented with a fresh flower.

Open House

The Carbon Model Railroad Society will hold a Christmas in July Open House at 529 Ore St. in Bowmanstown July 10-11, and July 17-18, from 1-5 p.m. The main HO scale display is in various stages of completion and is an excellent learning tool. The clubs portable HO and N Scale displays will also be in operation on the second floor. Admission is free. The building is air-conditioned. For more information, call Garry at (610) 826-6636.

Members of the LOAH will meet on Sunday, July 11, at 7 p.m. at in McGinley Hall.

One Day Camp

As their senior project, classmates, Wes Hurley, Sean Leslie, Terry Moll and Steven Hayes will be conducting a one day mini football camp at the high school on Thursday, July 29. The cost is $5 per child and all proceeds will be given to Carbon County Special Olympics. The program is open to children from kindergarten to eighth grade. Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts in the heart of Pennsylvania will hold a registration night, for the summer program on July 8, at St. John United Church of Christ. Registration will be held from 6-8 p.m., at 150 Pine St. Registration is open to girls in kindergarten through grade 12.

There is no charge for the program.

Coloring contest

The Western Pocono Lioness Club, in conjunction with the West End Park & Open Space Commission, will host a patriotic coloring contest for ages 5 to 12, at the Chestnuthill Park, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, July 10.

An advance copy of the picture to be colored can be obtained at several sites, including the library and the park and West End Happenings in Gilbert.

Prizes will be awarded at 12:30 p.m.

All contestants will receive free ice cream and must be present to win.

Golden Agers

The June 28 meeting of the Golden Agers was conducted by President Ronnie Bazik. Bernice Strepko read an appropriate message "Summer Time." Irene Hudasky read an article about life in the 1500s in Europe. Mimi Marrin gave her Sunshine Report.

There will be no birthday celebration in July. Combined birthdays of July and August will be held Aug. 9.

Panther Valley Senior Center

Fran Craigie, director of the Panther Valley Senior Center in Nesquehoning has announced July's activities.

Starting on July 1 there will be Pictionary at 11 a.m. July 2 is Penny Game at 11 a.m.

July 5 the center is closed; July 6 is line dancing before lunch and the Sunshine Meeting after lunch; July 7 is pay bingo at 11 a.m.; July 8 are blood pressures and going to Heisler's after lunch; July 9 ceramics.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, July 8 at 11 a.m. at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company. They will be celebrating the Fourth of July with hot dogs and sauerkraut. Bring desserts. They will be playing Bingo and other games.

Eldred supervisors

There will be an Eldred Township Supervisors meeting on Wednesday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the municipal building.

Writers' group

The Black Diamond Writers' Network will meet July 17, from 10 a.m.- noon, at the Tamaqua Public Library, 30 S. Railroad St. Guest speaker will be Anne Supsic, a professional travel writer and world traveler. She will offer tips on finding story ideas, formatting articles and finding a publisher.

The spotlight speaker for this month will be Patricia Shenyo of Drums.

The public is welcome to attend.

The BDWN is a nonprofit organization offering writing education and networking opportunities. The group meets the third Saturday of every month.
