Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held a summer meeting recently at the Tamaqua home of Donna Gerber. Members reviewed meeting and committee assignments, as well as plans for service, social, ways and means; and discussed budgetary matters.

A program was presented on ice cream and other frozen dessert facts. Each member was then encouraged to make their own sundae.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be stationed at Memorial Hall on Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 1-6 p.m. Donors should be 17 years of age and older.

The Lansford AMVETS Post will hold a meeting on Sunday, Aug. 22, at noon at the post home. Commander Michael Frey will be in charge of the session.

Methodist Charge

The schedule for the Coaldale/Summit Hill United Methodist Charge for Sunday, Aug. 22, is as follows:

Worship services will be held at 9 a.m. in the Summit Hill United Methodist Church and at 11 a.m. in the Coaldale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Burgess Gordon, pastor, will officiate at both services.

Golden Agers

The next meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers will be an indoor picnic on Monday, Aug. 23 at St. Joseph's Church. All who made reservations are welcome to the event.

Zion Lutheran Church

Morning worship begins at 9 a.m. Sunday, the Rev. John Hazel is pastor, (570) 645-3469. Visitors are always welcome.

Book bags of all children returning to school will be blessed during morning worship on Sunday, Aug. 29. All children and grandchildren of the parish and community are welcome to bring their book bags to be blessed.

Jonas Bake Oven debuts at fair

The Polk Township Historical Society will introduce the Jonas Bake Oven to the public at the West End Fair. Built around 1790, the Bake Oven was moved from the Hotel Jonas to the fairgrounds in mid-March 2010. It is now housed just outside the West End Fair Museum near the main stage area. Members of the historical society will be on hand with information and to answer questions. Stop by and help them welcome this invaluable piece of history to its new home. Writers' group

The Black Diamond Writers' Network will meet Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. until noon, at the Tamaqua Public Library, 30 S. Railroad St. Guest speaker will be Tamaqua Police Cpl. Henry Woods, the department's criminal investigator.

Cpl. Woods will share his 19 years experience, as well as present several actual cases and the techniques used to solve them.

The public is welcome to attend.

The BDWN is a nonprofit organization offering writing education and networking opportunities.

The group meets the third Saturday of every month.

SHCIO plans

The Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization has changed the date of its monthly meeting due to the upcoming Labor Day holiday.

The group will meet on Monday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. in the borough building. Persons interested in improving the community are encouraged to attend and present new ideas to the organization.

The Summit Hill Food Pantry distributes food to the needy in the community on a monthly basis, with the deliveries usually taking place on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
