Democrats to meet

The Eastern Schuylkill Democrats will meet on Monday, at 7:30 p.m., at the East End Fire Company.

Class of 1961

The Tamaqua Class of 1961 will meet July 27, at 7 p.m., at 605 Brew St. The group will discuss plans for a golden (50th) anniversary reunion.

Band rehearsals

The Tamaqua Raider Band has begun preparing for the 2010 Summer Band Camp with rehearsal sessions. The next summer band rehearsal will be held July 27, from 9-11 a.m., in the band room.

Al-Anon Adult Children meeting

Meetings take place on Monday nights from 7:30-9 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, Rt. 209 and Gilbert Rd., Gilbert (behind the Turkey Hill).

Did you grow up with a problem drinker? Have you been affected by another person's drinking? Al-Anon is for families, relatives, and friends whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking.

Zion Lutheran Church

Morning worship begins Sunday at 9 a.m. The sermon title this week is "Persistent Prayer." A children's sermon is also presented each week. The Rev. John Hazel is pastor, (570) 645-3469.

The parish picnic will be held on Sunday, Aug. 1 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Summit Hill. There will be a brief worship service inside the church at 11 a.m. and the picnic will follow outside.

Church council will meet on Sunday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m.

First Steps

First Steps, a support group for mothers, will have its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Primitive Methodist Church, 55 Hunter St., Tamaqua. The meeting will be held in the church social room from 6-8 p.m.

Participants will share a hot meal and discover fun exercises for children.

The sessions are free and open to the public. Child care for all ages will be provided free of charge. New members and volunteers are welcome.

Community supper

A free community supper will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 365 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton. Come enjoy a free meal and fellowship. No meal to cook or dishes to wash in the heat.

Park concert

The band Crazy Heart will perform on Sunday, July 25 in the Palmerton Borough Park. The concert begins at 7 p.m. In case of rain, the event will be held in the borough hall, 443 Delaware Ave. Bring a lawn chair. This week's concert is sponsored by the First National Bank of Palmerton.

PV Band Boosters

The Panther Valley Band Booster meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 24 at the Panther Valley Football Stadium, by the concession stand.


Garbage pick up

Nesquehoning has revised its garbage pick up. People who were on the Thursday route will have their garbage picked up on Mondays beginning in August.

The garbage pick up will be on a three-day schedule. If a holiday falls during a week, the pick up will be pushed back a day for everyone.

The Summit Hill Water Authority will hold its monthly meeting tonight at 7 o'clock in the borough hall. John Michalik, president, will be in charge. It was incorrectly stated in last night's paper that the meeting was scheduled for Tuesday night.

Golden agers

The Panther Valley Golden Agers met on July 12 with a presentation on preventing identity theft by Janine Holter from the Attorney General's Office.

Fran Golder read an inspirational message "Living for Today." Mary Ann Stotelmayer read some interesting verses.

Jean and Joe Pelcheck were welcomed back after a long absence while visiting family in Texas. Also welcomed was Alice Skrabak.

Mimi Marrin will send get well cards on the sick list.

Effort VBS

Jungle at Parable Quest is the theme of this year's Vacation Bible School being held at Effort United Methodist Church. The VBS program will run from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 6.

Monroe County Head Start in the West End wants to share its history and let folks know where it is now.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met July 13 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 47 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation.

Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker. Birthday greetings were offered to Rhoda Purnell, Shirley and Hub Becker, Faye Sweeney, Florina Martin, Dolores Walck and Jimmy Valentine.

Jean Machamer, Florina Martin and Shirley Becker provided inspirational readings.
