Golden Agers

The Panther Valley Golden Agers will meet on Monday, Nov. 8 with a guest therapist from St. Luke's Miners Hospital. If there is enough interest, bingo will be played. This will be the last time to sign-up for the Christmas party to be held at La Dolce Restaurant on Nov. 28, starting at 1 p.m.

Bells to ring

Beginning Nov. 5, the Salvation Army will be ringing bells in connection with its Red Kettle campaign. Various service groups will be helping. In Chestnuthill Township, that outreach will take place at Kinsley's in Brodheadsville.

Lions Board

The board of directors of the Western Pocono Lions Club will meet at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville. All Lions are welcome.

PV Band Parents

The Pleasant Valley Band Parents will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, at the high school.

Writers' workshop

The Black Diamond Writers' network will sponsor a workshop on writing mystery novels featuring Josh Berk, award winning writer of "The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin." The workshop will be held from 1-3 p.m., Nov. 20 at the Tamaqua Public Library, following the monthly meeting of the BDWN.

The workshop will include exercises on plot, setting, character, dialogue, description and more. Participants will be able to brainstorm outlines for detective stories during the hands on writing practice.

Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Oct. 20 at the home of Donna Gerber. The meeting included a Secret Sister Halloween party, hosted by Lori Schmerfeld. The program included the history of Halloween and numerous games. Members then exchanged Halloween treats.

Polk Twp. Historical Society Meeting

The Polk Township Historical Society will meet on Monday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Polk Township municipal building in Kresgeville. The evening's guest speaker will be William Dorshimer. Mr. Dorshimer served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He will share memories of his experiences as a member of the liberation forces in the European Theater. Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will conduct Individual BenefitsCheckUps at the Carbon County Agency of Aging Panther Valley Senior Nutrition Center, located in the School House Apartments, 90 E. Catawissa Street, at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10. This checkup is available free of charge to anyone 55 years or older, or 18 years and older and on disability. The checkup, sponsored by the National Council on Aging, is free and confidential. The goal of the checkup is to help people learn if they are potentially eligible for state, county and federal benefits of which they are unaware.

PV Elementary School

The annual Halloween parade by the students and staff of the Panther Valley Elementary School is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 29. Students will dress in costumes after lunch and the parade will commence from the elementary school at approximately 1:45 p.m.
