Winter recess

Northern Lehigh School District will have early dismissal at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23. Schools will remain closed for Winter Recess from Dec. 24 through Jan. 2. School resumes Monday, Jan. 3.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. held its annual Christmas party on Dec. 14 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 46 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld offered opening remarks. The event was catered by Christy Joy and included a gift exchange. Favors were provided by Betty Brobst and Eleanor Schmerfeld, while Hub and Shirley Becker donated Christmas lollipops.

Vice President Rhoda Purnell was welcomed back following an extended absence.

A free community meal will be served from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 365 Lafayette Avenue, Palmerton. The public is invited to attend and join in a free meal and holiday fellowship.

The hours for payments for the final week of the year for Mahoning Township tax collector Richard Swarcheck will be as follows: Monday, from 1-7 p.m.; Tuesday, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. (please note change); Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.; Thursday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.; and Friday from 10 a.m. until noon.

Summit Hill

Christmas schedule

The Rev. James Burdess, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, has announced the parish's Christmas season schedule of services as follows:

Christmas Masses - Friday, Dec. 24, 4 and 9 p.m.; and Christmas Day, 9 a.m.

For the Feast of the Holy Family, there will be Sunday (Dec. 26) morning Masses only. They will be celebrated at 9 and 11 a.m.

New Year's Masses - Friday, Dec. 31, 6:30 p.m.; and New Year's Day, 9 a.m.

Writers' workshop

The Black Diamond Writers' Network and the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association will combine forces to sponsor a workshop on visioning and setting goals. The workshop will be held Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Tamaqua Public Library. Guest speaker will be Cathy Colangelo, a life enhancement and career coach based in Weatherly. The public is welcome.

Remembering Sister

Christmas party

American Legion Post 316, Summit Hill, will hold its annual Christmas party for all children from the community on Saturday, Dec. 18, from 1-3 p.m. at the post home.

A little thing like a construction site is not going to stop the South Ward Playground Association from holding its annual Christmas party and visit from St. Nick. The event will just be held this Sunday, a little further south and west of the playground, in the Tamaqua Senior High School Cafeteria. Hours will be from 1-3 p.m.

In addition to a visit from St. Nick, there will be free face painting and a free bike give away.

Anyone planning to attend is reminded to use the rear doors to the cafeteria, NOT the front doors of the school.
