Mass time

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will celebrate Mass in honor of the Solemnity of Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, and at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Saturday worship

Effort UMC will hold a Saturday worship service at 6 p.m.

Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville holds a Saturday service at 5 p.m. Holy Communion will be celebrated. This service will now be held every Saturday, not just the first Saturday of the month.

Friday: True Women Bible Study and Play Group at 9 a.m.

Sunday worship, Rev. Jeff Stansbury, pastor, 10:45 a.m.

Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. with classes for all ages, including adult Bible study class. Holy Communion will be observed during morning worship.

Trinity Happenings

First Saturday worship with Holy Communion at Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St., Lehighton, is at 5 p.m. The Rev. Michael Frost, pastor at Zion's Stone Church, New Ringgold, presides.

Financial aid

The Tamaqua Area High School Guidance Department will sponsor an informational financial aid night on Tuesday. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and be held in the district auditorium.

The 2015-2016 financial aid form will be reviewed and general financial aid questions will be answered by a representative of the PHEAA.

Junior and senior class students planning to further their education, as well as their parents, are welcome to attend.

Information on local scholarships will also be available.

No preregistration or fee is required.

St. John's

Wednesday evening service at St. John the Evangelist Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, 7 p.m., Holden Evening Prayer Service with Holy Communion.

For those who wish to come early, a free, simple supper will be served at 6 p.m. and a brief Bible study is held at 6:30 p.m.

Service will not be held if school is canceled or dismissed early due to bad weather on Wednesdays.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its annual Christmas party as part of the regular December meeting. During a short business session, the group approved making a donation to Peter and Ida Kutash, MaryD fire victims.

Members brought covered dishes to share, while Evelyn Adams and Louise Flexer were in charge of the program.

The arrangement for the evening was to create something all white, with no green showing. Winners were Evelyn Adams and Mary Bridygham.

St. Matthew's

The annual Christmas cantata, "Images of Adoration" by Pepper Choplin, will be at St. Matthew's UCC at 7:30 p.m. today and then again at Effort UMC at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The children and youth of St. Matthew's UCC will present a Christmas pageant at the 9 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Christmas Eve

St. Matthew's UCC will hold two services on Christmas Eve, at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The 7 p.m. service will be with the Family Table style worship with most of "The Path" band, featuring Randy Cramer and vocalists.

Snow rules

Tamaqua residents are reminded of borough rules concerning snow removal.

Property owners are required to maintain a clear path, at least 3 feet wide, on sidewalks. Snow and ice must be removed from these pathways within 24 hours of the end of a snowstorm.

Snow, ice and other materials may not be thrown into the streets. Fines of $25 and up may be imposed on anyone caught throwing snow or ice into the street, or who fails to maintain a snow-free pathway.

UMC service

A Christmas candlelight service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church on the corner of Second and East High streets in Coaldale. All are welcome to come and enjoy the word, carols and candlelight with their family.

Christ Redeemer

Christ Redeemer Church in Coaldale will hold a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 6 p.m. Wednesday which includes communion. Call Pastor Marie or Joseph Terry at 570-645-6121 for information

Dog licenses

Schuylkill County treasurer Jackie McGovern reminds residents that 2015 dog licenses are now available.

Dogs 3 months of age or older must be licensed by law.

Licenses may be obtained at the county courthouse in Pottsville, by mail, online at or at a variety of licensing agents.

Locally, those agents include AAA at 202 E. Broad St.; Tom's Auto and Marine, Greenwood Street and Mountain Avenue; and Koch's Farm Service in the Lewistown Valley.
