Bowman Park Camp

Bowman Park Camp will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Tabernacle at the corner of Mill and Ore streets in Bowmanstown.

The Teen Challenge Choir will perform. The choir consists of young men from all over the U.S. and each member is unique as they are coming from a background of drug, alcohol and/or crime. You are sure to be touched as they sing, perform and testify to God's transforming power.

Model railroad open house

The Christmas in July Open House continues at the Carbon Model Railroad Society, 529 Ore St., Bowmanstown.The open house will be from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is free; donations are welcome. The building is air-conditioned.

Monthly giveaway

The Tamaqua Community Volunteers monthly giveaway will be held this Saturday at the M&M Self Storage center, next to Schickram's Car Wash on Rose Street.

Anyone wishing to donate items should have them at the facility between 8 and 9 a.m. Saturday. Donations of clothing, toys, tools, electronics, holiday decorations, pots/pans/dishes, cookware, furniture, appliances and practically anything else are welcome. The only items not accepted are floor-model televisions, computer monitors and obvious garbage.

All donated items must be clean and odor-free.

Tax office

The Coaldale tax office will be closed Monday through Aug. 3 to prepare school taxes for mailing.

Normal hours will resume Aug. 4

Office hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

If taxpayers qualify for exemption, please return your signed and dated application, in person, along with proof of eligibility. School exemptions must be notarized.

Beach party

The East End Playground Association is throwing a beach party this Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. There will be prizes for the best outfits and free freeze pops.

The movie "Teen Beach" will be shown at dusk, approximately 8:30 p.m.

The playground will also host an appearance by the Cressona Band at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Community fellowship

The Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network will host an evening of ecumenical music, messages and fellowship on Aug. 9. The event will be held at the Tamaqua Arts Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua, beginning at 7 p.m.

Trinity Happenings

Sunday worship with Holy Communion at Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St., begins at 9 a.m. The church is air-conditioned.

The Rev. Nancy Moore presides. A brunch reception will be held following the worship service to officially welcome Moore to the congregation.No reservation is needed to attend.

At 3 p.m. Sunday, there will be an organ recital/rededication following its repair and upgrades. The guest organist is the congregational son, Dwight Weaver.

Regional planning group meets

The Chestnuthill-Jackson-Eldred-Ross-Polk Regional Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township municipal building in Brodheadsville.

Filling shoeboxes

McMichaels UMC has begun collecting items for Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child.

In July and August girls' shirts, sizes small and medium in children's sizes, are being sought. Also needed are children's sunglasses, winter gloves and winter hats.

Summer concerts

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce continues its free Summer Concert Series this Thursday with a concert by the BC Combo (blues). Concerts are held from 6-8 p.m. on select Thursdays on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season, as sponsorship permits.

Other scheduled concerts include: Aug. 6, Fraser Thomas (acoustic jazz, blues and pop); Aug. 13, Amanda and Me; Aug. 20, Steve Brosky and Jimmy Myers (acoustic blues); Sept. 3, Diaspora (classic rock).

Golden Agers

The July 13 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers opened with an Inspirational message. Singalong followed with summer songs by the group.

Members celebrating birthdays in May, June, July and August will be recognized at the Aug. 10 meeting. The subject of medical fraud will be addressed at a future meeting.

The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. John Slovak Lutheran Church Social Hall.
