Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company. Bring a bag lunch. Also, bring in your wedding pictures to share in a Show and Tell. They will also play bingo.

Exercising seniors

There is a low-impact exercise class for those over 55 at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-10 a.m.

Bethany Church news

Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, North Street, Lehighton, will hold Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. for all ages; morning worship, 10:45 a.m. Kid's Club for children kindergarten through fourth grades is held every Monday at 6 p.m.; prayer meeting is every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Wrapped in prayer ministry is every Friday at 7 p.m.

Trinity happenings

Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St., Lehighton, will hold Sunday worship with Holy Communion at 9 a.m. Interim pastor the Rev. Don Hayn presides. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.

Calvary Evangelical

The Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will include a special message from a representative of CareNet Ministries of Schuylkill County. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.

An hour of praise and prayer will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Al-Anon meetings

Al-Anon adult children meetings are held every Monday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, Route 209 and Gilbert Road, Gilbert.

Cubs race

Cub Scout Pack 98 of Brodheadsville, chartered by Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, raced Pinewood Derby cars last Saturday. The Rev. Michael Quinnan visited the pack at Pleasant Valley Elementary School and offered prayer and words of encouragement.

Scouts voted for favorite cars in categories of Cub Spirit, Most Original, Most Awesome and Most Special.

Derby cars were made reflecting unique styles. All entries were recognized with a participation certificate and patch. Trophies were awarded to those who placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd, within each rank.

Holy Trinity Happenings

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton, will hold worship services with Holy Communion at 8 and 10:45 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 19.

Sunday School is at 9:30 a.m. The 10:45 a.m. service will be a brief service so as to allow time for the annual congregational meeting, which will follow the service.

Holy Trinity Circle of Angels will be participating in the Polar Plunge of 2014, to be held Jan. 18 at Scott's Park at Larry Holmes Drive and 3rd Street, Easton. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the plunge will be at noon.

Historical society receives grant

The Northern Lehigh Historical Society has acknowledged the receipt of a $500 grant from the Henry L. Mickley/Mable S. Fravel Charitable Trust.

The funds will be used to help defray the cost of painting the pavilion at the western approach to the Trout Run Covered Bridge along the Slate Heritage Trail.

Lions Club

The Slatington Lions Club will hold meeting at the Moose at 7 p.m. Jan. 21.

The speaker will be Jim Evans on Prostrate Help.

Safety Program

Volunteers are needed for the proposed Green Dot Program (see Dec. 27, 2013 TIMES NEWS), which is designed to provide people from all walks of life with the skills needed to combat violence. Training provided by the Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center of Schuylkill and Lebanon Counties will focus on a bystander intervention program, offering awareness, education and skills-practice.

Class of 1964

Members of the 1964 graduating class of Jim Thorpe High School, will meet at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Platz's, Lehighton.

Members planning to attend are to wear their favorite football team jersey, as the theme this month is Super Bowl.

There will be no collection of canned items for the food pantries or the flower fund. Pat Pry McCormick will be in charge of the entertainment for the afternoon.

The Tamaqua Street Machine Association will hold a special meeting to discuss the future of the car lovers' organization. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Jan. 26 at La Dolce Casa on West Broad Street in Tamaqua.

All current members and anyone interested in cars are welcome to attend.
