If you won't be lucky enough to be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, you can still bake up a taste of it at home.

Granted, you'll need to supply your own revelry in the streets, but a slice of this delicious king cake should get you in the mood. The top is decorated with the colors of Mardi Gras: purple, green and gold. You also can color the icing and decorate or you can drizzle with white icing and decorate with colored sugars.

Q. I am petrified of spiders. Is my fear justified? Are they dangerous or just creepy?

Spiders are not aggressive. They bite you only in self-defense. Most bites by spiders are harmless. However, there are dangerous spiders. Spider bites are responsible for fewer than three deaths a year in the United States.

Spider bites have caused people to have limbs amputated. These victims refused to get medical remedies early and suffered from large wounds that became infected.

On Feb. 26 the Lehigh Gap Nature Center held a bluebird housing project. Twenty houses were put together and taken home with instructions on the best method to install them.

Director Dan Kunkle said bluebird houses are apt to attract tree swallows also, and when placed too near trees a number of birds, especially wrens, are likely to move in. The only invasive bird is the house sparrow and when the boxes are checked, those nests can be removed.

Bluebirds like to be in an open area.

AP Photo/J Pat Carter Celebrity chef Melissa d'Arabian speaks to The Associated Press in Miami Beach, Fla., Saturday, at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. She talked about the economics of eating and food.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) – On television, Melissa d'Arabian teaches families how to stretch their food budgets. At home, she stretches the definition of cooking with kids.

Sometimes, her young daughters help her with elaborate recipes that evolve into arts and crafts projects of sorts where they aren't "counting on that food to actually eat," she said.

Other times, it's all about getting dinner on the table quickly, so she'll hand them a bowl of applesauce to stir while she does all the real food preparation.
