Walter N. Hill of Tamaqua will celebrate his 99th birthday on Monday. He was born in Philadelphia on July 21, 1915, the son of Joseph and Alma Hill.

After graduating from Wheaton College in Illinois and Eastern Baptist Seminary in Pennsylvania, he became a Baptist minister and preached for almost 75 years.

He was married to his wife, Rita, for 64 years. Rita died at age 88 on Nov. 2, 2006. Walter married Catherine Shutters in October of 2008.

The descendants of Weaver John Fretz and his brother, Christian, will gather at 9 a.m. Aug. 2 at St. Mathew's Kellers Church, 3668 Ridge Road in Perkasie, to celebrate the 126th anniversary of the first Fretz Family Reunion.

Family and friends are welcome to bring a recollection about old mills to share during the morning program.

Lunch will be covered dish with rolls and beverage provided.

The afternoon program will feature Bob Wood with his presentation inside the Old Mill.

The Bethlehem Garden Club's Annual Standard Flower Show will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a Roaring 20s theme at the Hotel Bethlehem, 437 Main St. in Bethlehem.

The show is a competition among area floral designers and horticulturalists and is judged by accredited flower show judges.

Three Divisions (Horticulture, Design and Special Exhibits) will showcase 74 horticulture classes; 10 design classes (vignettes, table artistry, still life, spatial thrust, topiary designs and 5-inch miniatures); and nine special exhibits.

Blue Mountain Health System will host a "Summer Picnic" complete with picnic food and information on how to prevent food-borne illness from improper food handling at 12:30 p.m., July 23 in the community room at the Gnaden Huetten campus, 211 N. 12th St., Lehighton.

"There's more to food safety than keeping the potato salad cold," speaker Nancy Matyas said.

"Picnicking is a special part of many summertime activities, but warm weather events also present opportunities for food-borne bacteria to thrive."

The 72nd annual Marsh Family Reunion will take place Aug. 10 at Indian Trail Park, Pavilion 1.

Those whose last names start with A-Z should bring a salad; N-Z should bring dessert.

The meal starts at 12:30 p.m. A business meeting will convene at 1:30 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded to the youngest and oldest male and female, farthest traveled, the most recently married couple, longest married couple and the larges family present.

Cake Walk and bingo prize donations are appreciated.

Beatrice Burbes

Beatrice Burbes, a resident of Hometown Nursing Center and formerly of Lehighton, is celebrating her 102nd birthday.

She was born on July 19, 1912.

She is the mother of two sons: Bruce Fritzinger of Lehighton, who is married to Charlotte; and Elmer Fritzinger, who passed away in 2001 in Florida.

Beatrice is the wife of the late Lewis Burbes, who passed away in 1979.

She loved going out to eat and shopping.

A celebratory dinner is planned with her family.
