Q. My husband told me he has no energy to do chores around the house because he's suffering from male menopause. He's a very funny guy.

Your husband was obviously trying to yank your chain, but there's some truth in his joking. Fatigue is a common symptom of male menopause, also known as andropause (andro means male).

Both andropause and male menopause are used to describe decreasing levels of the male hormone testosterone that come with aging. Most men see testosterone levels drop as they get older. Some have described andropause as puberty in reverse.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald K. Ritschel

Mr. and Mrs. Donald K. Ritschel of Andreas will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 18.

They were married in Salem United Church of Christ, Allentown, by the Rev. Charles Zweizig.

Mrs. Ritschel is the former Carol J. Hartzell, daughter of the late Penroy and Edith (Shook) Hartzell of Allentown.

Mr. Ritschel is the son of the late Joseph and Helena (Beltz) Ritschel of Trexlertown.

The Ritschels have two children, Mark D. Ritschel and Denise K., wife of Brian M. Craig.

For dementia caregivers in and around Carbon County, there is help.

A free Alzheimer's Support Group meets 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at St. John's Lutheran Church, 319 South Ave., Jim Thorpe.

The group will share ideas and tips to help caregivers cope with the day-to-day stresses of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia.

Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Dirnberer at the Ruins of Ephesus, Turkey

Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Dirnberger of West Penn Township celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a cruise from Italy to Turkey. The couple was married May 3, 1986.

The two-week cruise, taken this summer, included stops in Athens and Turkey, where they spent several days touring Istanbul, Kusadasi and the Ruins of Ephesus.

They also visited the Greek Islands of Mykonos and Santorini. On the return trip, visits were made to Naples, the Ruins of Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.

Four young adults were confirmed during services at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tamaqua Nov. 6. They are Tyler Hill, Lacie McManus, Matthew Sargent and William Butler. With the confirmands are confirmation supervisor Deb Davies and Zion interim pastor the Rev. Jeffry Kistler. Confirmation was postponed one week due to the early winter storm the previous Sunday. Confirmands and their families were guests at a reception following the service.

Two years ago, Nicole Boggs found herself struggling in her third grade classes at Panther Valley Elementary.

Homework and assignments were difficult for the young Lansford girl, and learning wasn't fun.

"I just didn't get it," the 11-year-old said of her lessons.

But, through the Carbon and Schuylkill SHINE Afterschool Program, which provides SHINE students with 32 weeks of afterschool activities during the school year; as well as nine weeks of summer home visits, Boggs now proudly says she enjoys school.

H.T.O. Services, a community-based activity center in Lansford, will host an Adult Night Out at 7 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 11.

This fall concert fundraiser will feature two local groups, who will perform for the evening's entertainment. Money raised will help cover the cost of additional programs at the center.
