The Rev. Doug Holtz, former pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albrightsville, once said that he felt one of his accomplishments as pastor was "to open the eyes of the parishioners to the needs of the community around them."

This week St. Paul's, under the direction of new, interim pastor the Rev. Christopher Matthy, is continuing with that mission. Friday, July 12 kicked off the fourth annual clothing drive at the church.

By Saturday afternoon the lower level of the church building was filled with men's, women's and children's clothing.

Vivian Marie Zalik

A daughter, Vivian Marie Zalik, was born to Kristin and Timothy Zalik of Palmerton at 12:56 p.m. on April 16, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem. She weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces and was 20 inches long.

Maternal grandparents are Michael and Susan Zavagansky of Lansford. Paternal grandparents are Brian and Michaele Kulick of Nesquehoning.

Maternal great-grandmother is Dorothy Zavagansky of Lansford. Paternal great-grandmother is Evelyn Malaska of Nesquehoning.

Vivian was welcomed home by her 2-year-old brother, Steele.

Q. I've never been a smoker and I just don't get why people do it. What's the attraction?

Only a non-smoker could ask that question. Every smoker, chewer and sniffer knows how wonderful tobacco can be. I know it's probably not politically correct to say anything nice about tobacco, but it's the truth.

All tobacco products contain nicotine, which is an addictive drug. According to the American Heart Association, the "nicotine addiction has historically been one of the hardest addictions to break." Nicotine is up there with heroin and cocaine.

Schuylkill Action Network kicked off its annual Schuylkill Shots Photo Contest and will accept entries on Facebook through October. Last year over 6,000 people from Philadelphia to Pottsville voted on the final selection of winning photos from over 150 submitted.

Winning photographers will receive prizes of gift cards ranging from $100 to $250 to REI, Amazon.com, or Calumet Photographic.

Members of the Lehighton High School Class of 1958 held their 55-year class reunion at the Mahoning Valley Country Club on June 22. There were 61 people in attendance, including 33 classmates. Class members traveled from as far away as Arizona, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia and New Jersey. Those in attendance included, front row from left: Kay (DeFrehn) DeMatte, Janet (Moyer) May, Betty (Haas) Forsythe, Barbara (Levendusky) Semmel and Josephine (Wolfe) Mariani.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Winners of three of 10 titles at The Performing Dance Alliance is, from left, Elizabeth Schlegel, Kira Hettler and Jaiden Muffley.

In May, at one of the biggest competitions hosted at The Performing Arts Alliance, Tricia's Dance Extreme, Lehighton, brought home three out of 10 titles. One was for modeling, and two were for talent. To receive a title, a competitor must have the four highest scores in the age division.

Named Little Miss Performing Arts was Elizabeth Schlegel. Kira Shannon Hettler was named Tiny Miss Talent. Jaiden Muffley was named Junior Miss Talent.

Mr. and Mrs. Dale Smith recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married on June 27, 1953 by the Rev. Edwin Kutz in Bowmanstown.

The former Betty Getz is the daughter of the late William Getz of Hellertown and the late Madlyn Getz of Aquashicola. Her husband is the son of the late Norman and Stella Smith of Aquashicola.

The couple has one son, Dale Jr. of Bowmanstown, married to Denise; and two daughters, Peggy, married to Larry Rennig of Palmerton, and Patty, married to Keith Smith of Palmerton.

Anita Shapolsky Art Foundation, 20 W. Broadway, Jim Thorpe, will present Jeonghan Yun and Choonhyang Yun's Trees Make Art.

The exhibit is a delicate and sophisticated fusion of Asian and Western papermaking techniques refined to create Zen (spiritual) "paintings" of paper alone. These works call the viewer into an intimate connection with the timeless essence of the natural world.

Palmerton Hospital Adult Day Services at Blue Mountain Health System will hold its Family Caregiver Support Group from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday July 24, at the Palmerton Health Center at 217 Franklin Ave. in Palmerton.

The support group centers on caregivers tending to family members with Alzheimers, stroke, dementia, Parkinsons, or other physical or mental disabilities. The group offers education and support from other caregivers who really do understand your daily obligations.
