SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Lichens cover a tree in Master Gardener Julie V. Foley's back yard.

One of the most common inquiries we receive at The Greenline, our Master Gardener help line, goes something like this: "There is something growing on my trees, a disease I think. I want to know what to spray on it to stop the growth."

Oh, how we love to spray questionable vegetation whether it is necessary or not. Our usual response at first involves questions. The most accurate answers come after we request samples and/or photos of the "growth" in question. More often than not, the mysterious invaders turn out to be some form of lichen.

In this June 3, 2012 image provided by Macduff Everton, artist, Mary Heebner, is shown in her new studio, in Santa Barbara, Calif. The open space, with plenty of natural light, is ideal to create larger works that she can begin on the floor, and then pin them to a nearby wall for a different perspective. An artist's workspace is as personal as the artwork.

Talk to different artists, and you'll get a variety of individual requirements for the spaces in which they create: Some need a lot of space, others very little. Some need quiet, others crank the music to deafening levels. There are those who want every piece of equipment in its place, and others who scatter their materials all over.

The common denominator? Each finds that personal blend of the functional and the inspirational.
