Penn's Peak

Monday, November 4, 2013
Ron Gower/TIMES NEWS Dewey Bunnell, left, and Gerry Beckley from the band America perform Saturday at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe.

The band America took a large Penn's Peak crowd back in time on Saturday night - back to the days of the Vietnam War; to the era when pop was tops.

Lead singers Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell put on an incredible show, singing the hits that made them famous, songs from their most recent project, and videos that accentuated their musical era.

It was about the fourth appearance at Penn's Peak for America, and like the previous concerts the auditorium was packed with fans of all ages.

America

"I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,

It felt good to be out of the rain.

In the desert you can remember your name,

'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.

La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la

La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la"

Most people have heard of this catchy song, "Horse With No Name," from 1972.

It was a major hit for the band America, which began as a trio consisting of Gerry Buckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek.

Josh Turner

Few religious songs make it big on the regular hit charts, but country star Josh Turner managed the feat with his recording of "Long Black Train."

The song is about finding "victory in the Lord" instead of riding the "long black train."

Ten years ago, the song made it to number 13 on the country charts, and kick-started what has become a successful career for Turner.

The personable bassist has charted quite a few records since then, including "Would You Go With Me," "Your Man," "All Over Me," and "Why Don't We Just Dance."

Protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church (not part of any other Baptist affiliation) picketed outside his concert about him being remarried. The Westboro Baptist Church is the same group which often has protests at military funerals.
