Pleasant Valley School Board on Tuesday approved the hiring of two assistant principals for the high school and one for the intermediate school.

Angela Borealo and David Sodl Jr. will be working under new high school principal Matthew Triolo.Brian Faust will join principal Cassandra Herr at Pleasant Valley Intermediate.Borealo and Sodl will each be earning $73,000 per year. Faust was hired at $74,600. The start dates for each is still to be determined.During the public comment section of the meeting, school board director-elect, Donna Yozwiak chastised the board for its failure to hire from within the district.Yozwiak, speaking as a taxpayer, pointed out that the district pays for professional and administrative development of its teachers, and yet the district went outside the district to hire the new administrators."There are many talented and intellectually gifted teachers who are loyal employees to Pleasant Valley who have applied for the assistant principal jobs and the board here has never even met some of these excellent individuals to speak with them," Yozwiak said."As a taxpayer I think this is a tremendous disservice to the Pleasant Valley taxpayers who have spent thousands and thousands of dollars to pay for higher degrees and certifications for these teachers and these professionals do not even get an interview. The board should be ashamed that they have wasted taxpayers' money. This is not a financially sound decision."Director of Human Resources Dr. John Burrus explained that while there were applications from within the district for the positions, none of those applicants made it to the final interviews with the board.Incoming superintendent David Piperato spoke up in defense of the hiring."In my 25 years I have worked with and interviewed a lot of assistant principals and I can assure you that these people are all highly qualified," Piperato said."These three are all top-notch."Piperato's comments were seconded by director Dan Wunder."Those who know me know that when I was a principal I hired a lot of assistant principals," Wunder said."I am so impressed with these candidates. They are the cream of the crop and they are going to bring a lot a new ideas with them."ResignationAlso during the meeting, the district accepted the resignation of school board director Steve Borger.Borger resigned effective June 27. The board then formally declared a vacancy.Tuesday night was also the final board meeting for retiring superintendent Carole Geary and high school principal John Gress. Both were thanked again for their years of dedication to the district and students.
