Jim Thorpe routs Tamaqua

An early deficit didn't bother Jim Thorpe.

The Olympians controlled play most of the game and once they started scoring they couldn't be stopped. The result was a 5-1 Jim Thorpe victory over Tamaqua in Schuylkill League boys soccer action on Thursday. With the score tied at 1-1 during the halftime break, it appeared that Wednesday's Schuylkill League boys soccer game between visiting Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe was being played as equally as that score would indicate. When Tamaqua lined up for a corner kick just 11 minutes into the contest, it was the first evidence of any offense the Raiders had shown up to that point. And they made it pay off.Logan Miller scored off the play to give Tamaqua a 1-0 lead. The Raiders couldn't muster much offense after that, however, as the Olympians turned up the pressure.JT penetrated its opponent's defense all game long. Raiders' goalkeeper, Ty Kistler needed to make several charges in front of his net to prevent oncoming breakaway shots. But with just over 12 minutes left in the first half, another rush by Kistler allowed an opportunity for Thorpe to tie the score. The official called a penalty kick and yellow carded Kistler after his collision with Jim Thorpe senior, Adam Francia. Thorpe's Chris Williams then buried the PK to tie the score at 1-1.The Olympians blasted more than a dozen shots at the net in the initial half. Kistler and backup keeper Mason Dolinsky had to make multiple point-blank saves. At the 11-minute mark, Dolinsky stopped Austin Carillo with an outstanding kick-save to keep the scored knotted at one."We are a different team without Riley McHugh on the field," (ankle injury - due back on Saturday), said Tamaqua coach Greg Sheeler. "Our midfield presence was just not there and Jim Thorpe's constant pressure contributed to too many turnovers."Thorpe continued to pressure Tamaqua at the start of the second half. Alex Putt scored his first of two goals with 28 minutes remaining. The freshman took a feed from Francia and fired a long shot into the left corner of the net.The Olympians scored again six minutes later. A great header by senior Cameron Condly led Ryder Wallace on a breakaway to increase the margin by two goals."Cam was a really good, physical presence on offense for us," said Jim Thorpe assistant coach, Lynn Stelling, who was filling in for Tony Dixon. "He's been able to make the transition from defense to offense very nicely."With 14 minutes to go in the game, Ian Montellius scored the fourth Olympian goal off a pass from Williams. Putt scored his team's fifth goal to put the icing on the cake."We preach communication and chemistry to our team," said Stelling. "And we distribute the ball unselfishly. We had four different scorers in this game."Meanwhile, Tamaqua's Sheeler mentioned his team has a few things to work on."We needed to slow the game down," said Sheeler. "We also need to improve our passing and look up the field for the ball."MINUTEMEN... In the first half, Jim Thorpe had a 15-minute run where it averaged almost a shot per-minute.AIRBALL!... Raiders' coach Sheeler could be heard yelling at his players to stop kicking balls in the air. Jim Thorpe made several rushes after the kicks hit the ground.
