Bears upend South

Pleasant Valley head coach Steve Caffrey knows that if his team is going to make a run, it needs to start now.

The Bears took a step in the right direction Tuesday with a 9-8 win over Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Mountain Division rival East Stroudsburg South."We need wins as a team," said Caffrey. "Just for team morale, and to show the girls that they are capable of playing. It was a huge win for us."But it wasn't easy.Pleasant Valley watched as a 7-2 lead after three innings turned into an 8-8 tie heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. After Alyssa Kotzmann doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, freshman Cameron Caffrey delivered what proved to be the game-winning RBI ground out that put the Bears (2-6, 2-3) in front."I just need to get the ball in play," Caffrey said of her approach afterward. "We needed to score, and she (Kotzmann) was the only one who could do it."Caffrey (1-for-3) played a large role in helping Pleasant Valley build its early lead, driving in Kotzmann and Tyler Wotal with a double in the bottom of the first inning that gave the Bears a 3-0 advantage.Jenna Scheller (1-for-4 three RBIs) padded Pleasant Valley's lead in the bottom of the second with a two-run single that scored Meara Hanyon (1-for-3, two runs scored, one RBI) and Taylor Steckel (1-for-3, one run scored, one RBI) to make it 6-0.The Cavaliers (1-9, 1-6) scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by Rachel Wasselius' two-run single.A single by Kaitlyn Liotenstein loaded the bases for East Stroudsburg South in the top of the sixth. Ashley King, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, followed and reached on an error, which allowed two runs to score and cut the Cavaliers deficit to 8-7.Another error allowed Angyl Santillana to reach and Liotenstein to score and tie the game at 8-8."I wish we would have kept our lead and played through it that way," said coach Caffrey. "But I gotta be proud that they didn't give up when they came back and scored and didn't hang their heads and say it's over with."Pleasant Valley starter Janelle Frable went the distance and worked out of trouble in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.Selena opened the seventh with a single for East Stroudsburg South and moved to third on back-to-back groundouts before Frable induced a game-ending pop up from Jaynah Wagstaff."This was a game that we definitely needed," said Frable. "We were ahead and I think we got a little bit comfortable. But as a team, we played very well and we came together to get the win in the end."The win was also a confidence booster for Frable, a sophomore, who finished with four strikeouts, allowing two walks and three earned runs."It does mean a lot to me because I am a younger pitcher," said Frable. "To be able to carry my team with me, and I absolutely have backup, because without them, I couldn't do it."ANOTHER ONE...
