ND edges Olympians

Notre Dame junior forward Ryan Pfeiffer knows the importance of being in the right spot at the right time on the soccer field.

Tuesday's District 11 Class 2A quarterfinal round game against Jim Thorpe allowed him to display that knowledge.Pfeiffer scored both of his team's goals as Notre Dame edged Jim Thorpe, 2-1.With the scoreboard empty through the majority of the match-up, Pfeiffer managed to put in the contest's first goal following a scrum in front of the Jim Thorpe goal. The quickness of the action preceding the goal caused some defensive confusion, leading to Pfeiffer pounding home the first tally with 9:27 remaining in the game.Six minutes later, the Crusaders' Luke Fleissner took a shot that deflected off the crossbar. Pfeiffer was in the right spot once again, and blasted in his second goal of the afternoon for the 2-0 lead with time running out."To be honest, both times I scored, I just seemed to be in the right spot at the right time and sometimes, that's all it takes," Pfeiffer said after the game. "I thought we played really well together as a team today and it paid off, eventually. But Jim Thorpe brought the intensity. We knew they would be a tough match-up because of the strong season they had this year."With that resolve on display, the host Olympians continued to battle, despite the two-goal deficit, and it paid off, as Jake Burkhart was rewarded a penalty shot with 1:42 remaining. The senior put in the penalty stroke to cut the deficit in half, but time elapsed on the Olympians' hopes, ending the game and their season. With the win, the Crusaders (11-7-2), move on to the semifinals to face top-ranked Salisbury.Meanwhile, Jim Thorpe head coach Tony Dixon says farewell to a large group of 16 seniors, who were part of this season's Olympian roster."This was such a strong group of players this season with a great group of seniors," Olympian assistant coach Lynn Stelling said. "It's hard to see them go. It really is a family, and that's why they made their chant at the end of timeouts, 'Family'"BY THE NUMBERS ... Notre Dame outshot Jim Thorpe 28-11. Olympian senior goalkeeper Phil Struble stopped 21 shots in a strong effort in his final career game.SEEING THE POSITIVES ...Stelling was happy with the Olympians' performance, saying, "We did a great job of holding possession today for a majority of the game. Unfortunately, it came down to those final few minutes where they scored. But we're happy with our kids' effort and proud of the season."POSTGAME ...Jim Thorpe head coach Tony Dixon needed to leave immediately following the game due to a family emergency.
