Shimko, Kanger Triple Crown champs

A Tamaqua girls cross country runner and her high school coach captured championships in the Schuylkill County Triple Crown 5K Series.

The Triple Crown series is comprised of the Rhoades Race 5K in Saint Clair, Tamaqua's Truskey Run and the Sol Lipton Run Fest. To win the Triple Crown, runners must enter all three races. The runners with the lowest combined times are named champions.Blue Raider senior Monika Shimko had a collective time of 59:10 and was named the female Triple Crown winner. Shimko's coach, Tom Kanger, posted a total time of 61:07, and earned Triple Crown honor on the men's side.The final race in the three-event series, the Rhoades Race 5K, was held on Sunday. Shimko was the top female runner in the race with a time of 19:07. She also placed first in the Truskey Run and the Sol Lipton Run Fest to easily capture the female Triple Crown title. Meanwhile, Kanger found himeslf in second place after the opening two events. But his fourth place in the Rhoades Race 5K (18:49) was enough to propel him to the series championship. Kanger's overall three-race time was just :04 ahead of second-place finisher Cael Heaney of Nesquehoning.
