Carbon jury clears dentist

A Carbon County jury panel in a malpractice lawsuit found in favor of the defendant on Monday.

The panel ruled that Steven Wasko,

D.D.S., of Route 903, Lake Harmony, was not liable (or negligent) for injuries that Cheryl Glaser, of Macungie, sustained in a car crash on Dec. 17, 2008, along Route 33 near the Belfast exit, in Bushkill Township. The panel deliberated for about three and a half hours on Monday afternoon/evening before reaching its decision. The trial began last Tuesday, with testimony concluding on Friday.Glaser claimed that she was scheduled for a tooth extraction and in advance of that procedure Wasko prescribed for her the drug azithromycin for days before the procedure. The suit alleges that Wasko did not properly advise Glaser of the side effects of the drug and that she experienced them the day of the procedure. The side effects, the suit claimed, caused Glaser to pass out at the wheel of her car while en route home from her appointment with Wasko, on Dec. 17.She sustained serious injuries in a crash, according to the suit. The jury panel only had to decide if Wasko was liable for the injuries Glaser sustained. If the jury had ruled that he was liable, then another jury panel would have been selected at a later time to determine damages. The plaintiff has 10 days to file a notice of appeal of the verdict, which will then be decided by presiding Judge Steven R. Serfass.
