Toomey addresses Carbon County GOP

The general election campaign is getting underway across the country, and that includes here in Carbon County.

On Friday, Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) stopped in Lehighton to get local republicans excited about the election, and to talk about his own race against democrat Katie McGinty.

Toomey visited the Carbon County GOP headquarters, meeting with residents and elected officials.

He linked McGinty, with the company behind a controversial proposed wind farm in Penn Forest Township. He also said that McGinty helped Gov. Tom Wolf come up with a proposal for the largest tax increase in Pennsylvania history last year.

Toomey talked about his own record -- including fighting against the very tax incentives that make the windmill project possible. Toomey has also fought to keep open Guantanamo Bay, and to oppose the Iran nuclear deal, two issues he discussed as well.

He was joined by state representatives Doyle Heffley and Jerry Knowles, and Carbon County GOP chairman Lee Becker.

Toomey asked the audience to help in what he said will be a hard fought campaign season.

"You know this as well as I do. The entire federal gov't is what's at stake here. That's what this election is about. it's the white house, the supreme court, control of the senate, and maybe even the house of representatives and all that that implies, and man that's a lot," Toomey said.
