Anthracite wins D-18 title

DRUMS - Two words served as a great source of motivation for the Anthracite 9-10-year old All-Star team throughout this year's District 18 Little League Tournament.

"We finished one game short of winning the district championship last year against Valley West," Anthracite manager Ron Hood said. "We finished one game short of winning the Panther Valley tournament a season ago to Jim Thorpe. So, our motto coming into All-Stars was simply 'One more.'"After breezing to the South Division title and then taking the opening game of the best-of-three championship series on Saturday, Anthracite put itself in position to fulfill that motto.Sunday against Hazleton, Anthracite did just that, rolling to 'One more' victory, a 12-5 decision over Hazleton."Every time we broke it down at practice, it was always 'One more,"' said Hood. "One more out. One more hit. One more game. And, hopefully that will follow us all the way through Sectionals."Anthracite, which rolled to four mercy-rule wins on its way to the South championship, looked like it could be headed to another one as it exploded for 10 quick runs against Hazleton.Although Hazleton hung tough and didn't let that happen, Anthracite was always in control after its early eruption.Anthracite got plenty of production from the top of its order as leadoff batter Chase Weaver (two hits, three runs scored, one RBI) and No. 2 hitter Matt Machalik (three hits, three runs scored, four RBIs) combined to score half of their team's runs."It was a team effort," said Machalik. "We came here together and together we all got the job done."Now, we're going to Sectionals. And, hopefully, we can win that too. This is an unbelievable feeling."According to head coach Hood, the team effort extended beyond just the play on the field."I can't say enough about the parents from this team," Hood said. "They all chipped in. They all helped. The fathers were at practice every day, the mothers were running them everywhere. It didn't matter when we would practice, everybody was there. They were great."And, they all get along. We had a get together last Saturday night and everybody was there."CLOSE TO A CYCLE ... Machalik was a double shy of hitting for the cycle as after walking in his first at bat, he belted a two-run homer, an RBI single, and an RBI triple in his next three plate appearances.BLACK'S BAT ... In addition to the big games from Weaver and Machalik, Tyler Black also delivered offensively for Anthracite with a single, a triple, a run scored, and two RBIs.GAME ONE STANDOUTS ... Anthracite won Saturday's series open 9-5, scoring four times in the top of the sixth to snap a 5-5 tie. Five batters had multiple hit games for Anthracite in the game one win. Cody Orsulak finished with two singles, two runs scored and a RBI. Machalik followed with two singles, a run scored and a RBI, Weaver and Stephen Hood both recorded two singles and two runs scored, and Drew Kokinda added two singles and a run scored.GAME ONEAnthracite 103 104 - 9 12 2Hazleton 005 000 - 5 6 4Machalik, Orsulak (4) and Orsulak, Goida (4); Horinko and Bodnar.
