Thorpe man faces child sex charges

The Jim Thorpe Police Department took a borough man into custody Monday and charged him with seven counts of sexual offenses involving two young children.

Jared Andrew Novy, 36, of Center Avenue, Jim Thorpe, was arraignedMonday afternoon before Magisterial District Judge Eric Schrantz. He faces five charges involving a 7-year-old-girl. The charges include: rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and endangering the welfare of a child.The charges involving a 4-year-old boy include indecent assault and endangering the welfare of a child.According to the criminal complaints, the police department received a report from Childline on Dec. 3 indicating possible sexual assault of a child.Through forensic interviews Dec. 14, the children saidNovy had shown them pornographic videos and had touched the little girl. The children said they had showered with him, and the boy had witnessed theencounter between Novy and the girl.Lee Marzen, a detective with the Jim Thorpe Police Department, couldn't comment on this particular case, but said the case came to light because "the public is more aware of these situations."Pennsylvania's new laws involving Mandated Reporter Training has educated people and made them more aware of child sexual abuse, their responsibility to report it and how to report it.Novy was taken to Carbon County Correctional Facility with bail set at $100,000 for one set of charges and $25,000 straight for the second set of charges.A preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 28.
