Lehighton teen charged after two-county police chase

State police have filed a long list of charges against a Lehighton teen who led troopers on a high-speed chase early Saturday morning.

Devin Austin Marshall, 18, hit speeds of 85 mph in a 45 mph zone during the chase, which covered sections of Lower Towamensing Township and Eldred Township.

After they disabled Marshall's vehicle, police searched it and allegedly found marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Three people under the age of 18 were also riding in the vehicle during the incident.

According to state police at Lehighton:

Around 1 a.m. a trooper observed a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with multiple vehicle violations traveling on Forest Inn Road in Lower Towamensing. They attempted to pull the vehicle over.

Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly turned left onto Little Gap Road and began speeding away.

Police pursued the vehicle along Little Gap Road and allegedly observed the Marshall throwing a plastic bag and lit ash out of the vehicle's window. They said the he also repeatedly crossed the center double-yellow line, while traveling at a high rate of speed.

The chase continued into Monroe County. Police said that Marshall slowed to about 40 mph to navigate the windy road. It was at that time when troopers initiated a "precision immobilization technique" maneuver, where they intentionally struck the rear quarter panel of the vehicle, causing it to spin and become disabled.

Marshall was taken into custody without incident.

Police said Marshall appeared to be under the influence, and was in possession of a bag of marijuana, a glass pipe containing marijuana, and rolling papers.

He was taken to Palmerton Hospital for a drug test. He was subsequently arraigned on charges and sent to Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail.

The three juvenile passengers in the Jeep were released to their parents. Police did not say whether they were charged as well.

Marshall now faces one count of fleeing and eluding police, which is a felony. He also faces charges of DUI, drug possession, drug paraphernalia possession, and a long list of traffic violations.

A preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 16.
