Moyer, Raiders run over Colts

To say that Bud Moyer carried his team on his back last night during Tamaqua's victory over Marian is probably an understatement.

He carried Marian defenders on his back too, on several runs while rushing for 143 yards on 34 totes of the rock, including 23 consecutive rushes to end the game. The senior running back also caught three passes for 32 yard which helped boost Tamaqua past long time AFL foe Marian, 31-21.His Herculean efforts scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion, accounting for 20 of his team's 31 points. All of Moyer's marks happened despite Marian's defense holding him to just 32 yards on 11 first half carries.Moyer's modesty underlined his game's achievements even more."I just do what I can to help us win," he said. "We were sloppy in the first half, but we got fired up and our 'o-line' really opened up some holes. We came out confident in the second half that we would win this game."Marian opened the scoring when quarterback, Ethan Kuczynski rolled out and found tight end, Matt Stanziola in the left corner of the end zone to cap off a 10-play drive. The Colts' star running back, K.J. Snerr, who would later leave the game with an injury, spearheaded the drive with six carries for 29 yards of the 46 needed to score. After Tamaqua (5-5) took the lead with two TDs by Moyer, Sneer's running led the Colts(6-4) down to the Raider seven yard line . On a fourth and goal. Kuuczynski fired a pass over the middle to Snerr in the end zone for a touchdown. On the play, Snerr was hit hard at the same time by two defenders and would leave the game with 5:07 to go in the half and he would not return."He sustained a leg injury and that's all we know at this point," said Marian coach, Stan Dakotsky. On the ensuing change of possession, Tamaqua senior, Dylan Dannenfelser looked to throw an option pass, but instead found a running lane through the Colts' defense and ran 73 yards to give the Raiders a lead they would relinquish by the time the half ended. The Raiders trailed 21- 20 at the half, but most dominated the final two frames. They executed a near perfect 16-play, seven minute, 90-yard scoring drive to take the lead for good with three minutes to go in the third quarter."We are tough when we get a lead," said Tamaqua coach Sam Bonner. "Besides Moyer, I give a lot of credit to Thad (Zuber) He's a first year QB and he made some big plays in the passing game for us.""I have to say it like it is," said Dakotsky, whose Colts will now prepare for next week's playoff game. "They outplayed us in every aspect. They blocked and tackled better and their special teams were great too, especially with their squib kick offs in the second half. My hats off to them. They deserved to win.""We played mistake free football and that usually gives you a great chance to win," said Bonner. "What else can I say except it was the best way to end our season."The night, however, belonged to Bud Moyer. When asked what his career at Tamaqua meant to him now that's it's come to a close, he stood strong and with barely any voice left he took little credit for all that he has done for the program."My coaches and my teammates get my thanks for helping me to have a great four years of football here."IRONY IN THE AIR... Coming into the game, Marian was known for the more accomplished passing game, but at the end of the night, the Raiders won the air war with 101 yards to just 44 for the Colts.TRIPLE WHAMMY ... In the second quarter, Tamaqua's linebacker, Matt Weaver not only sacked Marian's quarterback for an 18 yard loss, he forced a fumble and then recovered it on the Marian 23, which led to Moyer's second touchdown.SUPER SUB ... Even though Snerr's injury was a huge loss for the Colts' offense, junior running back, Michael Neary was a solid replacement, gaining 91 yards on just eight carries, including a 42-yard TD run.MOYER MANIA ... Just to a final stamp on Moyer's night, he carried the ball on 34 of 46 of his team's rushing attempts, again to mention, number 34 took the ball through the Marian defense for the final 23 plays of the game.
