Lehighton Area Middle School students will honor two soldiers who gave their lives for their country: Ezra Kreiss and Walter Haydt.

Ezra KreissKreiss lost his life during "Exercise Tiger" in the English Channel.This was to be a live military training exercise that would simulate the landing on "D-Day" a month later.The mission went terribly wrong. Kreiss was among 900-plus servicemen who lost their lives due to a German E-boat attack.This was the most deadly training attack in U.S. military history.His body is buried in Cambridge Military Cemetery in England.Kreiss was married to the former Madeline Haas of Lehighton's Haas' Store.Together, they had one son, born just weeks before his death.Walter HaydtHaydt was killed on Dec. 18, 1942.He was credited as the first Lehighton serviceman killed in action in World War II.Haydt was a radio operator in the B-24 "Texas Terror" that went missing.Besides the other 11 military personnel on board was $100,000 of U.S. Army military payroll cash.The men were missing in action for over two years.His remains, along with the entire crew, are buried together near the 90th Bomb Group base at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery.
