Community Safety Day scheduled

Carbon County familieslooking for something fun and educational to do this weekend, look no further.

The annual CommunitySafety Day is scheduled for Saturday at Mauch Chunk Lake Park. The event, hosted by state Sen. John Yudichak, Kid Zone Blue Mountain Health System, the Carbon County commissioners, the Carbon Masonic Lodge 242 and the Nolan Ritchie Stay Afloat Foundation, will take place rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the swimming area of the park.The event highlights area organizations and agencies that will be set up throughout the park to educate children and their parents about various safety issues, including water safety, animal safety, fire safety, bicycle safety, poison control and more.Fun activities such as face painting and the coconut crusher demonstration, which shows the importance of wearing a helmet, are planned, and free food and giveaways will also be available.Emergency responders, including fire, police and emergency medical staff, will also be showcased, and the day will highlight military families and areaveterans.In addition, a special presentation will take place at 11 a.m. at the park to honor Palmerton native Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey, who earlier this year was named the 15th Sergeant Major of the United States Army. Dailey serves as the personal adviser to the Army chief of staff on matters affecting the enlisted force.Community Safety Day is an annual event that started as the Fun-N-Safety Fair in 2007 and has since grown in size andpopularity. It is free to allCarbon County residents.Last year, over 1,000 people attended and more than 20agencies, 15 fire departments, two medical helicopters and a water rescue team participated.
