LV Carpenter Cup softball splits

PHILADELPHIA - A 14-2 loss to Delaware South in the Carpenter Cup Softball Tournament did not stop Lehigh Valley from coming back to defeat Jersey Shore 9-3 yesterday at FDR Park in Philadelphia.

"We weren't necessarily concerned, but we all took a break, refocused, felt strong, and came out early," said Madison Kymer of Pleasant Valley High School. "We kept the pressure on and did what we had to do."Kymer's three-run double to left field with two outs and the bases loaded put Lehigh Valley ahead 5-0."Yeah, I was a little bit nervous because I didn't want to leave them out there. I was pretty excited to be able to bring those runs in," she said.Kymer, who played third base yesterday, was also part of a pick-off with Whitehall's Mackenzie Guzy, who was catching."The runner was just taking a lead, and Mackenzie threw down to me. It was a beautiful throw, and I put the tag on her," said Kymer.Jersey Shore began to inch its way back, pulling to within two runs by the fifth inning.Alyssa Kotzman, also of Pleasant Valley High School, had a two-run triple between left and center field later in the game."Yeah, it felt pretty good. There was someone on second and third, and I knew I had to bring them in. [The score was too close]," Kotzman said. "I was very excited and relieved."The Carpenter Cup Softball Tournament, which continues today, is double-elimination.Kotzman, who played first base yesterday, said, "We were pretty pumped up [for the second game]. We bonded very well in the infield, and we all communicated well with each other."Lehigh Valley began its third and final game of the day, taking a 4-0 lead over Inter-AC, before thunderstorms rolled in, and the tournament was halted.Kymer led off the top of the first inning with a triple to left field and scored the first run of the game.Palmerton High School's Kendra Pekurny was the starting pitcher against Inter-AC."Our defense is solid, and there were only one or two runners on base, no one past second," Pekurny said.Lehigh Valley's game against Inter-AC will pick up in the second inning today.
