New isn't always better

Dear Editor,

Thank you so much for the letter from Mr. Richard M. Gross, Times News, Dec. 27, and thank you, Mr. Gross. Finally! Someone tells it like it is about "those lights!"I don't know all the different ones about which you wrote, but the lights on new cars are atrocious! They are terrible to see when they are coming at you, and they are terrible in your rearview mirror! I can't believe they are allowed on cars! Now let me address the double headlights. Especially the pickups. They are carrying regular headlights and then the ones on the bottom, which we (old folks) knew as "fog lights."The younger generations don't understand what that means; they just know it's "cool" to have those lights on the bottom.Fog lights were down below for use in FOG! Can you believe it? It was because as everyone at the time knew, headlights were no good in fog, but the lights down below were better, and that's why they were called fog lights, because they improved vision in fog! Now, they are simply a "cool" addition to build up a man's ego! Then they have both sets of lights on at the same time, blinding anyone unlucky enough to be coming toward them or to have them in their rearview mirror! So, Mr. Gross, thank you again for your timely and much-needed letter about "those lights."I could go on about tinted glass, which never should have been allowed in the first place, because it hides whatever is in the vehicle. Pity the poor policeman having to approach a car with tinted windows and being unable to see what it is that he is going to have to face! Will it be a simple checkup for a turn signal light that isn't working? Or will it be a criminal with a gun or other type of weapon? The policeman can't always see what's in the vehicle until he gets there or it's too late and he's been hurt."New and improved" isn't always good or safe, and sometimes it's just plain downright dangerous!Ruthann SchlechtLehightonP.S. About the fog lights, what I've written is what I remember my dad and uncles talking about regarding them. If what I've just written is wrong, I'll stand corrected by whoever says different.
