GRAFFITI: Lehighton garage door targeted

Michael Miller and his wife Grace of Lehighton are battling the borough and police department to do something about graffiti directed at them.

The interracial couple appeared this week at the borough council meeting to speak about racist comments written on their Second Street garage door."Last week we noticed on the garage door Nazi signs and words that said 'we will kill you (racial slur).' I own my home, I like it here," Miller said.Vice President Scott Rehrig interrupted Miller, "Will you refrain from using that word?""I can't refrain from it it's on the garage," Miller said. "I'm so angry that this could happen here. We don't feel, after four days, satisfied."At the meeting Miller addressed Lehighton Police Chief Brian Biechy directly."You're police chief of Lehighton. Did you hear about this?""I did today," Biechy said."It happened two days ago," Miller said.Miller repeated the words that were on the garage door again."Let's refrain from that word or you'll be removed from chambers," Rehrig said."This is what's on our garage door in the back. It's been four days and nothing, no feedback. 'I will kill you' needs feedback," Miller said."I have already told you two times to talk to the chief. He will help you," Rehrig said.Miller then turned and directly addressed Biechy."Nazi signs on our house. Can I get some answers right now, because this is not acceptable," Miller said.He was then notified that his five minutes were up. Miller stood and stared at Biechy."I'm scared," he said.Miller was then removed from the meeting."That's how we handle it throw me out. That's crazy," he said as he was escorted from the room.Miller called the Lehighton police to report the graffiti last week.Friday morning, the graffiti remained on the door."The problem is, people didn't see anything," officer Michael Svetik said. The location of the garage is in an alley parallel to Second Street. The buildings located in the alley are tightly lined garages, making it difficult to catch someone in the act."We hate these type of crimes. There isn't much to go on right now," Svetik said.Currently the police have no leads."Usually after some time people will start to talking about it," he said."This came out of the blue, there haven't been any problems in that area for some time."The issue remains under investigation.
