Green helps JT boys cop team title

The Seventh Annual Olympian Invitational gave many Times News area athletes the chance to shine in one of the biggest meets so far this season.

None took advantage of the opportunity more than Jim Thorpe's own Rayan Green, who took first in the triple jump and high jump, while also capturing second in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles.Green's results helped the Olympians capture the boys' team title with 93 points for the second time and first since 2010."This means a lot for the boys," said Jim Thorpe head coach Frank Miller. "They've just been absolutely unreal this season. We have 22 kids on the team, but they get after it."We had a number of standout performances today, from Rayan (Green) being Rayan to a number of other guys really stepping up. It was an overall great team effort on the boys part and a lot to build on going forward."With a number of accomplishments to choose from, Green pointed to the high jump, which he won with a mark of 6-2, as his biggest triumph."I knew coming into it that this would be more of a challenge than my other dual meets, so I'm really happy that I got the victory," Green said. "I feel like I'm improving every meet. I just feel like I'm doing really well at this point in the season."If I can keep this up, who knows where I'll be at the end of the year."Jim Thorpe started the meet with a bang, as the team of Dylan Bucior, Ben Saxon, Jacob Saxon and Johnathan Condly took the boys' 3200 meter relay with a meet-record time of 8:28.03 besting the mark of 8:32.21 set by Pleasant Valley last season."I did exactly what I wanted to do there - I gave Ben (Saxon) a pretty big lead and we were able to hold on to it," said Bucior, who also took second in the 1600 and 800 and was a part of the third place 1600 relay team."It just means so much to do so well. Getting individual records is great, but doing it as a team with these guys is a lot better. It's a lot more exciting."Randy Sanon took second for the Olympians in the 100, while Jacob Saxon and Johnathan Condly placed third in the 1600 and 3200, respectively.Palmerton, the defending boys' team champion, placed third with 69 points in the team standings this year.Jon Anthony took first in the discus for the Bombers with a throw of 139-0.5, a result he was more than pleased with on a less than perfect day."I was just hoping to throw my absolute best," Anthony said. "Even though my spin wasn't up to par, I still had my power throw and I consider that my insurance card, and I was able to do well because of my training."The team of Harley Appelbaum, Dominic Shivone, Sean Doherty and Mike Stasko took first for Palmerton in the 400 relay with a time of 46.29.Led by Tyler Crum and Tom Ruzicka's individual titles, the Lehighton boys took fourth in the team standings with 59 points.Crum took the top spot in the 100 with a time of 11.77, and also placed second in the long jump and fourth in the 200.For Crum, who missed much of last season with an injury, the win was a special one."I'm definitely proud of that," Crum said of winning the 100. "Last year I tore my hamstring in the first meet and was coming off of that and had to go through a lot of therapy to get back into it."Ruzicka won the javelin with a throw of 154-4, a result that showed continued improvement for the senior."Today was my first day doing a full approach," said Ruzicka, who was also on the Indians 400 relay team that took second place. "On my third throw I just hit everything right and it went flying."Jim Thorpe also had a nice showing from Brooke Cope, who won the javelin with a throw of 132-4.Knowing she can compete a high level against top-flight competition had Cope feeling good afterwards."I had high expectations for myself going into it," said Cope. "I know I'm going up against great competition, but that's my motivation to get first."Tamaqua's Monika Shimko took first in the 800 with a time of 2:25.41 and helped the Lady Raiders take second in the 3200 relay."It was great to see her go out and challenge herself like that," said Tamaqua head coach Tom Kanger. "She still ran a great time and showed a lot of improvement, which is important."Tamaqua girls took fifth with 45 points.TN Second & Third Place resultsSecond place finishers were: Colleen Hoffman, Jim Thorpe (pole vault); Charles Debski, Palmerton (javelin); Northern Lehigh boys 3200 relay (TJ Dooley, Aaron Hoffman, Gavin Kemery, Bryce Moser); Paige Demetriades, Tamaqua (javelin); Sean Doherty, Palmerton (triple jump); Malik Roper, Tamaqua (100); Spencer Hay, Palmerton (high jump 6-2); Ryan Rubio, Northern Lehigh (400); Jessica Olewine, Northern Lehigh (long jump, triple jump); Gavin Kemery, Northern Lehigh (3200)Third place finishers were: Rebecca Strohl, Lehighton (shot put); Riley Durishin, Lehighton (high jump); Spencer Hay, Palmerton (long jump); Paige Demetriades, Tamaqua (pole vault); Trevor Schilling, Tamaqua (javelin); Joe Blauch, Lehighton (discus); Matt Smarr, Tamaqua (pole vault); Brianna Doherty, Palmerton (100); Nate Troxell, Northern Lehigh (110 hurdles); Jaclyn Wood, Palmerton (100 hurdles, triple jump); Trevor Skripko, Tamaqua (shot put); Lehighton girls 400 relay team (Tia Brownmiller, Celina Fital, Christina Green, Rajah Quinones); Jim Thorpe boys 1600 relay team (Dylan Bucior, Chalid Smalls-Stokes, Ben Saxon, Samuel Gilkes).
