Lehighton fire chief resigning

By TERRY AHNER

tahner@tnonline.comLehighton is in the hunt for a new fire chief after its incumbent announced his intent to resign from the post.On a unanimous measure, borough council agreed on Monday to advertise for the position, despite the fact it has not received a letter of resignation from borough Fire Chief Gary Frable.Council agreed to the measure, at which time it said it would accept letters and resumes to fill the position."We're looking for leadership," said Councilman Scott Rehrig. However, council could not act on Frable's resignation because he has not yet sent an official letter.Asked how long he planned to serve, Frable said his intention was to continue in the position through the end of the year. After the meeting, Frable declined to comment.Frable was appointed fire chief on May 9, 2011.He took over the position after former Fire Chief John "Jack" Kuller passed away on April 22 of that year.Frable had served as assistant chief under Kuller from 2002 until his ascension to the top post in the fire company. Also on Monday, council tabled action to approve the Department of Community & Economic Development Multimodal Transportation Fund grant contract.Last month, the borough was awarded $245,000 to make pedestrian improvements to the Colonel Jacob Weiss Park through DCED's Multimodal Transportation Fund.As part of the agreement, borough Manager Nicole Beckett said the borough must match 30 percent of the grant, which comes to $105,000.Beckett added the borough is awaiting several other potential grant awards.
