Indians win Schuylkill title

POTTSVILLE "The third time was a charm," was the explanation given by Lehighton head boys' soccer coach Dave Yob after the Indians earned a thrilling 2-1 overtime Schuylkill League Championship victory over newfound rival Blue Mountain.

Lehighton fell to Blue Mountain twice during the regular season, but the Indians were victorious in the match that mattered most.Joe Marks scored from a Dan Baka corner just before halftime to give the Indians some momentum heading into intermission.Blue Mountain did however have some opportunities in the first half on some counter runs and long throw-ins. Lyle Luckenbill is known as a specialist in that department as he has the ability to launch the ball at least 30 yards through the air into the opposing box."We expected that as we saw him do that twice this season," said Yob referring to Luckenbill. "They've scored a number of times off of set pieces like that this season. It's just like defending a corner kick every time. We used Chris Lawler as more of a "rover" instead of marking a specific man and it seemed to work out."Blue Mountain was the aggressor in the second half, as it out shot Lehighton by a 9-1 margin. Jonathan Benner finally cashed in on a chance in the 54th minute as he struck a masterful shot to the far post to beat Indians' sophomore keeper Tyler Dietz.Despite the equalizer, Dietz was lights out the entire contest. The young Lehighton keeper has had experience on the big stage, such as his gutsy save during penalty kicks in Lehighton's district playoff victory over Pleasant Valley last season."My defenders are truly one of a kind," said Dietz. "They play so hard and with a ton of heart. I love all of them and they are always out there to win and play until the end. I'm proud of them."Joe Marks earned a penalty kick at the 13-minute mark of the extra session and the crowd exploded shortly after. The result wasn't what it expected.Blue Mountain keeper Aaron Albertini kept the Eagles alive by deflecting the Marks penalty shot wide.Blue Mountain stormed right down the field, but Dietz made another save, and the Indians attacked immediately after that. The ensuing Indian attack earned a corner taken by Ben Cordova. Cordova's cross bounced around in the box. The ball ended up at Frank Bokan's feet as he turned, struck, and beat Albertini for the game-winning goal.Bokan said, "We just wanted to move the ball, keep possession, and take good shots. I just tried to hit the ball as hard as I could and it went in. It was a great feeling."Dietz and Bokan who go way back on the pitch together were both impressed with each other's performance."I've been playing with Frank since we were very little," said Dietz. "It's an amazing feeling seeing someone you've known and played soccer together with for so long help achieve a win like this one.""I don't know if I'm shaking more from nerves or the cold," said Yob as he held the championship trophy. "This team has super chemistry. They're a lot of fun to be around. They have their little moments where they don't get along, but that's just like any family. They play the game hard and are a great bunch of young men."After a very successful season in 2013, Yob's club followed up by earning a Schuylkill League championship in its first year in the league."This has to be my number one moment in my coaching career," said Yob. "This is the first championship that I've won as a head coach. I've had teams that have won divisions and lost in the post seasons, but this is by far the best experience."Lehighton (15-3) will open District 11 Class AA tournament play on Thursday when they host Notre Dame of Green Pond at 3 p.m.
