Hometown crash injures two

Both drivers were sent to area hospitals in a two-vehicle crash Friday on Hometown Hill, Route 309.

According to those at the scene, including several eyewitnesses to the collision, a Subaru Impreza driven by an elderly man from the Lake Hauto area tried to enter Route 309 from Holland Street about 2:15 p.m. when the car he was operating shot across four lanes of traffic.In the process, the Subaru collided with a northbound Dodge Grand Caravan and narrowly missed other north and southbound vehicles before being stopped by an impact with the southbound curb."It almost seemed as though he hit the gas instead of the brake," one eyewitness said to police. "We had to quickly hit our brakes to avoid it."Traffic was heavy at the time due to Black Friday shopping.Witnesses included Times News circulation employees en route to pick up newspapers for delivery.The Subaru driver appeared to be confused and was treated at the scene by paramedics from Tamaqua Community and Ryan Township ambulances before being taken to a hospital.The driver of the Dodge, a younger male, complained of neck and arm injuries and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital by the Tamaqua ambulance.The names of the drivers were not immediately available.Both vehicles sustained substantial damage and were removed from the scene by Hope's Collision and Towing Service, Tamaqua.Also responding were Rush Township Police, Hometown Fire Police, Lehighton Ambulance and Tamaqua Rescue Squad.
