Lehigh, Northampton counties favor Wolf

Voters in Lehigh and Northampton counties, parts of which are in the Times News coverage area, went the way of the commonwealth on Tuesday, granting victories to Governor-elect Tom Wolf, a Democrat, over incumbent Republican Gov. Tom Corbett.

Meanwhile, voters in Northampton County participated in the balloting for the 17th Congressional District, where incumbent U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, a Democrat, defeated challenger David J. Moylan, the Republican. Northampton voters favored the incumbent in that race.That was also the case in a battle for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives' 183rd District seat, where voters in parts of Lehigh County favored the incumbent, Rep. Julie Harhart, a Republican."We had a great day and wonderful result," Harhart said. "I'm really happy with the results that came in."I really want to thank the voters that showed their support," she said. "As I visited the polls, I was glad to see all the voters that came out."On being elected to her 11th term, Harhart said, "That's what makes it more special, and to have the win that I had really makes it special, and that the people have that confidence in me to send me back to Harrisburg to be their voice."Meanwhile, Rep. Mario Scavello, a Republican who won the new 40th Senatorial District seat that includes parts of Northampton County, defeated Democrat Mark Aurand, and had solid help in Northampton (the seat also includes parts of Monroe County), and Sen. Patrick M. Browne, also a GOP member, won re-election over Democrat Walter Felton Jr. in Lehigh County.Governor's raceIn the balloting for the governor's race, Wolf won Lehigh County by a ratio of 42,545 to 34,997 over Corbett.The Northampton County balloting saw him win by a difference of 21,577 to 16,841.U.S. 17th DistrictCartwright defeated Moylan by 9,025 to 7,784 in Northampton County. That area includes sections of the city of Bethlehem, as well as the city of Easton; the townships of Bethlehem, Forks, Lower Mount Bethel, Palmer, Plainfield District Delabole, Upper Mount Bethel, Upper Nazareth District East and Washington; and the boroughs of Bangor, East Bangor, Freemansburg, Glendon, Nazareth, Pen Argyl, Portland, Roseto, Stockertown, Tatamy, West Easton, Wilson and Wind Gap.Pa. 183rd HouseIn the 183rd District of the state House of Representatives, Harhart won re-election to another two-year term by defeating two opponents. She tallied 7,395 votes, including 4,317 votes in townships of South Whitehall (districts 5, 6 and 8), Washington and Whitehall (district 7, 10 and 11) and the Borough of Slatington, all in Lehigh County, and 3,078 votes in the townships of Allen, Lehigh and Moore (Beersville and Klecknersville districts) and the boroughs of North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport, all in Northampton County.Her opponents included Democrat Terri Lynn Powell and independent Michael Molovinsky. Powell tallied 2,271 votes in the Lehigh County regions and 1,362 in the Northampton County districts, for a total of 3,633, while Molovinsky had 1,001 votes in Lehigh and 272 votes in Northampton for a total of 1,273.Pa. 40th SenateIn the balloting for the 40th Senatorial District seat, which was newly created by redistricting, Scavello won overall and was helped by a 9,655 to 6,710 victory in sections of Northampton County, including the townships of Allen, Bushkill, East Allen, Forks, Hanover, Lehigh, Lower Mount Bethel, Lower Nazareth, Moore, Plainfield, Upper Mount Bethel, Upper Nazareth and Washington and the boroughs of Bangor, Bath, Chapman, East Bangor, Nazareth, Pen Argyl, Portland, Roseto, Walnutport and Wind Gap, all in Northampton County.Forty-three voting districts (out of 50) in Monroe County also compose the district. Scavello was a 17,131 to 11,694 winner in Monroe and won overall by 26,786 to 18,404.Pa. 16th SenateBrowne was a 34,920 to 21,115 winner over Felton in the 16th Senate District balloting, winning re-election to another four-year term in the district that includes Times News area municipalities in Lehigh County. Voters in Heidelberg, Lowhill, Lynn, Washington and Weisenberg townships and those in the Borough of Slatington help compose the 16th Senatorial District. Other municipalities in that district are the city of Allentown and the townships of Lower Macungie, Lower Milford, North Whitehall, South Whitehall, Upper Macungie, Upper Milford and Upper Saucon and the boroughs of Alburtis, Coopersburg and Macungie.U.S. 15th DistrictU.S. Rep Charlie Dent, a Republican, ran for re-election to another two-year term and was unopposed. He collected 53,311 complimentary votes in Lehigh County and 13,246 token votes in parts of Northampton County, including the city of Bethlehem (Northampton County Portion) Wards 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 14, 15, 16 and 17 blocks 1026, 1123, 2018 and 2055 of tract 011300 and the townships of Allen, Bushkill, East Allen, Hanover, Lehigh, Lower Nazareth, Lower Saucon, Moore, Plainfield Districts Belfast, Kesslersville and Plainfield Church, Upper Nazareth District West and Williams and the boroughs of Bath, Chapman, Hellertown, North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport. His district also includes parts of Berks and Dauphin counties.Pa. House - 187thVoters in the Maxatawny Township and the boroughs of Kutztown and Lyons, all in Berks County, and the townships of Heidelberg, Lowhill, Lynn, North Whitehall, Upper Macungie and Weisenberg, all in Lehigh County, participates in the Pennsylvania House 187th District balloting yesterday, although there was no contest. The incumbent Gary Day, a Republican, collected 11,621 complimentary votes.
