Wind-fueled fire guts Schuylkill house

A wind-swept blaze Sunday gutted a house along a rural, dirt road at the border of Rush and Ryan townships.

The Schuylkill Communications Center dispatched response teams at 2:15 p.m. to the area of 50 Long Lane, a narrow dirt road on the outskirts of Grier City. There, emergency responders found the home of Susanne M. Long fully engulfed."It was almost down by the time we got here," said a firefighter at the scene.According to neighbors, Long and daughter Briana live in the house. Both were safe, neighbors said. The Longs also have two small pet dogs and a few cats, neighbors said. It is unclear if the pets made it to safety.By the time flames were doused, the only thing left standing was a chimney. The house, built in 1910 according to courthouse records, is located in Ryan Township but about one-fourth of the property falls in Rush Township.Firefighters dealt with extremely windy conditions in battling flames, along with obstacles such as the narrowness of the lane and absence of a nearby water supply.Tanker trucks were dispatched from fire departments in several neighboring municipalities and portable ponds were set up to supply water.Trucks replenished their water supplies from a site near the Air Products & Chemicals Plant in Still Creek, several miles away.Among those responding were firefighters, fire police and rescue units from 10 municipalities: Rush, Ryan, Hazle, Walker and Delano townships, along with Ringtown, Quakake, Shenandoah, Mahanoy City and Tuscarora. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
