Snisky's hit caps wild Thorpe win

Every kid dreams of having the winning hit.

On Sunday night, Noah Snisky got to live his dream. With the game tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, Snisky smacked a line drive to right field that scored Aaron Williams and gave Jim Thorpe a thrilling 16-15 victory over Franklin Township in the District 18 11-12 Tournament."My son said he had a dream that this would happen, where he would hit the walk off," Jim Thorpe coach Mike Snisky said afterwards. For the younger Snisky, the goal was simple once he got to the plate."I just wanted to try to hit the ball anywhere to try and score him (Williams)," he said. "That's all I was thinking about. And that was my first walk off ever, so it felt really good."The fact Snisky was even in a position for such a hit was somewhat surprising after Jim Thorpe built a commanding 13-5 lead after the third inning.Franklin erased its seemingly insurmountable deficit with seven runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of five Jim Thorpe errors to pull within one at 13-12.The rally didn't surprise Snisky."They're a good team," the coach said. "I knew they weren't going to hang their heads and quit. I knew they would keep battling."That's what they did, and they took advantage of our mistakes."After Jim Thorpe extended its advantage with another run in the bottom of the fifth, Franklin mounted one last charge in the sixth, scoring three runs and taking a 15-14 lead on Mason Barndt's infield single that brought in Ethan Lutz."I knew we could hit, and I just told them not to quit," Franklin coach Tony Fristick said. "I know with this team, when the first guy hits, the next guy's going to hit. And we took advantage of some (Jim Thorpe) errors that they gave back to us, and kept going."That really helped get their spirits up. When you're down by eight runs, that's really all you can ask, is to get a chance."Unfortunately for Fristick and Franklin, Jim Thorpe had the last chance at the plate by virtue of winning a coin flip prior to the start of the game and earning the opportunity to bat last.Jim Thorpe didn't waste time putting runners on, as leadoff hitter Nick Goff reached with a single. Joe Kamienecki roped a single to right field and Evan Dart loaded the bases when he reached on an error.Max Schlennar reached on another error and Goff came around to score to tie the game 15-15 with no outs and the bases still loaded for Snisky, who brought in the winning run. With the win, Jim Thorpe will now face Valley West on Tuesday, an opportunity the team is looking forward to."We're going to get back to practice tomorrow, and hopefully cut down on those mistakes," Snsiky said. "We just have to refocus and keep battling."We're proud of the kids, not just because they won, but because they were able to battle back."Even though their rally fell short, the progress the Franklin squad has made this year is obvious."I think for us, and the guys that I have, making it to this point is huge because last year we struggled as a group," Fristick said. "I've said it before that they play for each other. There are no selfish players on this team."We'll go forward in the Panther Valley tournament and see what we can do there. The wins we had in the early part of this tournament showed that we can be in any game, and we'll get a chance to face some of these teams again."Franklin Twp. 410 073 - 15 13 8Jim Thorpe 454 012 - 16 15 6Fristick, Wentz (3), Smith (6) and Hawk; Rosahac, Schwartz (2), Binder (5), Snisky (6) and Schwartz, Rosahac (2), Snisky (5).
