Man tells judge: 'I need help'

A Carbon County man pleaded guilty in the county court on Tuesday to assaulting his mother and grandmother.

Jason Michael Horvath, 30, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of aggravated assault, but mentally ill. The charge involves an assault on his mother, Bridget Horvath. An assault count involving his grandmother was dropped. The plea was accepted by Judge Joseph J. Matika, who noted that in April he conducted a competency hearing in which a psychiatrist testified that Horvath was mentally ill at the time of the assaults and still needs long-term mental health treatment. The incident occurred on Oct. 21, 2012, when Lansford police responded to 316 W. Patterson St. for a report of a domestic assault. On scene officers found Horvath's mother and grandmother covered in blood due to lacerations to the face and head, according to court documents.Police said Horvath used various objects, including a knife, to inflict the injuries. When police entered the home they found Horvath standing in front of a mirror talking to himself.Horvath told police that he "heard voices" at the time of the incident.Defense Attorney Gregory Lee Mousseau told Matika that since the incident and his incarceration Horvath has been taking medication previously prescribed for him for his mental health problems. Mousseau said at the time of the assault Horvath had stopped taking his medication for some time, unknown to his mother.Horvath told Matika, "I need help. Please get me help."Matika accepted the plea but deferred sentencing so Mousseau can get Horvath's complete mental health history to determine a proper placement for him at the time of sentencing.
