Two shot after domestic dispute

An apparent domestic dispute in Lansford Saturday night turned violent, and two people were shot.

According to Lansford police, the shooting victims are Melissa Price, 37, and Levi Zagata, 36. Both are fighting for their lives from the injuries sustained at the residence they share at 439 W. Patterson St., police said.Four children between the ages of 3 and 12 were inside the residence when the shooting happened, according to police. Sergeant Jack Soberick of the Lansford Police Department, who is in charge of the investigation, said he doesn't believe any of the youngsters witnessed the shooting. None of them were injured. They are the children of Price. Zagata is their uncle. All have been placed in the custody of relatives of Price, police said. One person was shot several times and the other was shot once, said Soberick, who declined to provide more specifics since the investigation is continuing. The shooting happened at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Soberick said it appears no one else was directly involved in the shooting."It was domestic related," he said. "There was no outside shooter."He confirmed that both victims have life-threatening injuries. The two were transported by Lehighton Ambulance to St. Luke's Miners Memorial Medical Center in Coaldale, then flown to trauma units.Price was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, while Zagata was transferred to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. The incident unfolded when police were summoned to the scene after receiving a call about "an unknown problem" at the residence.Soberick said he has requested to hear the 9-1-1 tapes on the call, but believes that the call may have been made by a neighbor. He said he couldn't provide additional details because he hasn't been able to speak with the victims.Soberick was assisted at the scene by other officers from the Lansford Police Department, as well as police from the neighboring boroughs of Summit Hill, Coaldale and Nesquehoning. The residence where the shooting happened is across the street from the Lansford Stadium along Route 209. The initial plans after the shooting were to land the helicopter at the stadium, but a deep snow pack forced the pilots to instead land at the Coaldale hospital. It's not the first time turmoil has disrupted the lives of the couple. The children are reportedly from Price's former boyfriend, David J. Zagata II, according to an affidavit from a previous incident. On Nov. 11, 2012, David Zagata entered the residence of Levi and Melissa where he "became violent and threatening," according to court papers. At that time, according to an affidavit, David Zagata threatened to kill Levi and the children. Also at that time, he armed himself "with a large knife from a drawer in the kitchen," and forced Levi to leave the residence with him.Levi was located in St. Clair at the time of that incident.David, who is lodged in the Carbon County Correctional Facility, is still awaiting trial on those charges.
