Farquhar joins 1,000-point club

The adulation came from all over.

"Growing up together and seeing that actually happen is really cool," said teammate Madison Mummey."She's the epitome of a team player," Palmerton head coach Rodney Strohl remarked."Congratulations to her. She's a great player and she really deserves it," Pleasant Valley head coach Nadia Gauronsky added. They're talking about Palmerton's Jade Farquhar, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark during Saturday's 53-33 non-league win over Pleasant Valley. While Farquhar acknowledged she knew she was only 10 points shy prior to the game, the talented senior also admitted that she was taken aback by how much attention her feat received."I didn't really know what was happening at first," she said. "Everyone stood up and was cheering, and I thought, 'Okay, it's halftime.'"Then it kind of set in a little bit. It's just such a great feeling to have everyone that supported me for four years here for my 1,000th point."Like most facets of her game, Farquhar's timing was precise, as she hit what proved to be her 1,001st point on a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half. The shot also came off an assist from Mummey, who spotted a wide-open Farquhar in the corner with just seconds remaining in the second quarter.Though no one could have planned how it would happen, the situation proved to be a perfect storm for the two long-time friends."Before the game, she said that she wanted to assist it," Farquhar said of Mummey, "and it just so happened that it worked out that way.""I'm really excited for Jade because I grew up playing with her all through elementary school and stuff like that," said Mummey. "It's something that's just so exciting to be a part of."What took 16 minutes to accomplish during Saturday's game was nearly six years in the making as Farquhar played her way from the junior high ranks to a starting role with the varsity squad. After watching her put in countless hours honing her skills throughout the year and during the offseason, it's clear to Strohl why Farquhar has achieved such great success, and why the Lady Bombers are currently 6-0."Since I started (coaching) last year, she has just been such a gym rat," he said. "She works hard on her game. And not just shooting and offense - she works with the other girls to get them involved. She gets her points so fluidly that we're able to keep the ball moving."But when we need that big shot, we know to go to her. And she knows we rely on her as well. Being a team captain, and seeing her put in as much time as she has, it's great to see her get these accomplishments."For the ever-selfless Farquhar, the achievement is one that's best shared with her teammates."I have the greatest team in the world around me," she said. "On every point I get, someone else has an assist and every assist I have, someone else scores."So we kind of work like a machine and we're always happy for each other's success."With 1,008 points and counting, there are sure to be a few more triumphs for Farquhar and the Lady Bombers to enjoy before this season is over.
