Police: Tamaqua man stole dust cleaner, huffed

Tamaqua police have cited Jason Robert Stephens, 21, of Tamaqua, after a somewhat unusual shoplifting incident at the Family Dollar Store on Monday.

Police were dispatched to the store, at 137 N. Railroad St., at 11:37 p.m. after an employee observed a male taking a can of electronic dust cleaner, then huffing the aerosol. The man had also been in the store on Friday, doing the same thing. The man then left the store, walking south on Pine Street.A short time later an officer saw a male fitting the description provided by store employees. He was in front of 44 Mauch Chunk St. and went inside as the officer approached. A woman in the building agreed to tell the man to come back downstairs to speak with the officer. He did, and the officer was able to identify him as Stephens. He immediately told the officer he didn't steal anything from the store. He did admit being in the store on both days, noting he struck his head on the door on Friday. He also then admitted the huffing. He was cited for retail theft and given a verbal warning that he would be arrested for trespassing if he went in the store again.
