Library hosts volunteer recognition breakfast

The Palmerton Area Library has a dedicated core group of 80 adult volunteers who do a variety of jobs.

Because the library appreciates all they do, it held a recognition breakfast for them in its Knight's Gallery.Diane Danielson, library's director, said that during the 2013 year, volunteers worked a total of 1,250 hours, which is equivalent to having someone work 24 hours per week, every week."Some of our hardest working volunteers are our board of directors," Danielson said.She then named them all. They are: Chuck Laviolette, president and Towamensing Township representative; Barbara Clemmer, vice president and Friends of the Library representative; Louise Koons, secretary and Lower Towamensing Township representative; Susan Choy, treasurer and member at large; Barbara Eastland, member at large; Susan Debski, Palmerton Area School District board of directors representative; Audrey Larvey, member at large; Jack Woginrich, Borough of Palmerton representative; JeNell Mertz, Borough of Bowmanstown representative; and Mata Curan, honorary member.Danielson noted the jobs volunteers do, which include homework tutors, which meet every Monday and Wednesday; and reading and singing to preschoolers during story hourVolunteers also organize, set up and manage the Art Show and Lunch, the Photo Show, the Quilt Show and the Student Art Show, as well as other events at the library; the book sales; shelving and straightening books; adopting shelves; and keeping books in order.The library recognized the volunteers who worked more than 25 hours in the past year.They are Carol Costenbader, who worked 91 hours; Annette Anthony, 75 hours; Donna Les, 73 hours; George Chupa and Carol O'Brien, 54 hours; Lisa Koller, 41 hours; Gayle Behr and Sheila Lanak, 30 hours; Roy Christman and Kathy Ahner, 27 hours; Kathy Spirk, Jim Shafer, Shirley Serfass and Gail Nonnemaker, 26 hours."We truly appreciate everything that you as volunteers do to keep the library running and to improve the quality of our services here," Danielson told the guests of honor."You truly do make a difference here at the library."The Palmerton Area Library is located at 402 Delaware Ave. and is open Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.; Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.For more information, call the library at 610-826-3424 or email
