Nolehi wins first

With some uncertainty at quarterback due to injuries, Northern Lehigh had been experimenting with running back Nate Farber taking direct snaps out of the backfield in practice.

It was something that hadn't been used in game action all season. That is, up until Friday night against the visiting Salisbury Falcons. And did it certainly provide huge dividends for the Bulldogs. After starting quarterback Chance DeLong was injured on the Bulldog's second offensive possession, Farber proceeded to handle a majority of the snaps from that point on. He accumulated a career-high 207 yards on 37 carries-including 148 after DeLong's injury-and scored two touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 12-6 win over the Falcons at Bulldog Stadium."With the circumstance with us knowing that our backup quarterback was a freshman who hadn't played, we've had that ready the past two weeks just incase," said head coach Joe Tout. "To me, he's really become the leader of our team.""I never played there in a game before, but we practiced it," Farber said. "I just knew I had to get it done for the team to win. I wanted to step up, and show that we could do it to win."The Bulldogs lost backup quarterback Chad Cederberg last week, and Floyd Snyder, their third-string quarterback, broke his hand last Friday. The win ends the Bulldogs' four-game losing streak to begin the season."Our kids deserve all the credit," Tout said. "They battled for four quarters. This was a true team effort and a family effort."Tied 6-6 late in the fourth quarter, Farber and the Bulldogs looked to regain the lead after driving 74 yards to the Falcons' 1-yard line. Instead, their 10-play drive, which included eight Farber runs, was halted after his fourth-and-goal attempt came up short. The Bulldogs' defense, however, came up with a huge fumble recovery on the Falcons' next offensive play. Jace Umlauf's recovery gave the ball back to the Bulldogs on the Falcons' 2-yard line. There was little question about whose hands the ball would end up in. Farber's mindset was simple."We just got to score to win," Farbar said. "We just got to score to win."His two-yard touchdown run was his second of the day. Farber scored on the team's first possession, taking a pitch up the right sideline for a 40-yard touchdown scamper that made it 6-0 early. There was no secret that the Bulldogs wanted to run the ball from the get-go. They totaled 287 yards on 58 carries, and attempted just one pass, a fourth down shot into the end zone just seconds before the first half expired. The Falcons tied it 6-6 when quarterback Troy Parton capped off a nine-play drive with 4:44 to play in the third. He took an option keeper right, and maneuvered his way through the Bulldogs' defense. That's the only score they'd allow all night."I thought the night belonged to our defense," Tout said. "We caught the break with the fumble at the 1-yard line. To be put in that circumstance, our defense definitely battled and won this game."Running back CJ Young added 34 yards on 10 carries, and tight end Theo Young ran for 28 yards on the night.
