Two trucks collideon I-81; closes road

A tractor trailer rig and a dump truck collided along Interstate 81 in Ryan Township, Schuylkill County, early Tuesday afternoon forcing the shutdown of the two northbound lanes for several hours.

State police at Frackville said Michael Robert Mowery, 32, of Stephenson, Va., was operating a 2000 Volvo truck tractor with trailer in the right lane about 12:40 p.m. when he attempted to use an emergency-vehicle-only median crossover to get to the southbound lanes. He slowed down drastically and began veering into the left northbound lane towards the crossover. At this point his rig was struck in the rear by a Ford tri-axle dump truck driven by James Shingara, 44, of Trevorton, Northumberland County. Upon impact the rig jackknifed, struck the guardrail corner and the emergency crossover, then continued into the median. The rig came to rest with the tractor cab jackknifed to the left, facing south, and the trailer pointing west, across the left northbound lane and shoulder. The dump truck came to rest north of the crash, along the left shoulder.Shingara had to be extricated from his truck and was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville, where he was treated and released. Mowery was not injured.Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the West Mahanoy Township/Altamont Fire Company, West End Fire and Rescue of Mahanoy City, and ambulances from Frackville and Shenandoah.
