Cullen, Sirkot give Weatherly first swim gold medals

POTTSVILLE - Matthew Cullen and Alex Sirkot became the first two Weatherly High School swimmers to win gold medals at the Schuylkill League Swimming Championships at the

D.H.H. Lengel Natatorium on Saturday.Cullen won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.65 and Sirkot took first place in the 50 breaststroke with a 29.77 time.Sirkot also finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.27 and Cullen was fourth in the 100 freestyle.Last year, Cullen was second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle. Sirkot won the bronze medal last year in the 50 breaststroke.Tamaqua's Jacob Kropf medaled in the 50 backstroke finishing second with a time of 28.84.On the girls side, Tamaqua was presented the regular season championship trophy and Joann Butkus set a meet record in the 50 butterfly with a winning time of 27.71.Butkus was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay team with Caroline Kanaskie, Emily Bumbulsky and Danielle DeCindio with a time of 2:00.34 and the 400 freestyle relay team with Kanaskie, DeCindio and Miranda Amey in 3:55.07.Kanaskie also won the 200 freestyle (2:03.60) and second in the 100 freestyle (56.70). Butkus finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:04.18), Bumbulsky was second in the 100 butterfly (1:09.95), Carly Trovinger was second in the 50 breaststroke (34.86) and Amey finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:44.74).
