Thirteen enter guilty pleas

Thirteen defendants in pending criminal cases entered guilty pleas on Tuesday in Carbon County court.

Senior Judge Richard W. Webb accepted the pleas as follows:Alan James Arthofer, 20, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count each of fleeing or attempting to elude police and three summary motor vehicle code violations.Arthofer was arrested on Oct. 21 when Palmerton police attempted to stop him along Mauch Chunk Road for a traffic violation. Arthofer did not stop and led police on a high speed chase that traveled over various roads, according to police. During the chase Arthofer turned off the lights on his vehicle to avoid detection, police added.Police lost sight of Arthofer during the chase but managed to secure the license plate. They went to his home and found the car parked in a barn. When confronted by the officers, admitted he was the person driving the vehicle.Webb placed him on probation for a year and ordered he attend anger management counseling. On the three summary offenses he was fined a total of $250 and costs.James Lee Dubois, 59, of Kunkletown, pleaded to one count of driving under the influence (DUI). He was arrested on April 17 along Hahns Dairy Road in Lower Towamensing Township by state police. Given a test, the result was .21BAC.Webb deferred sentencing so Dubois could apply for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program (IPP).Anthony Balzano, 31, of East Stroudsburg, pleaded to one count of retail theft. He was arrested by state police following an incident on May 9 at the Country Junction Store in Towamensing Township in which he stole a ferret. Charges also included a weapons charge that was dropped in a plea bargain.Webb deferred sentencing to a later date so Balzano could apply for the IPP.Jonathan Scott Strohl, 21, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of unsworn falsification to police. He was arrested on June 4 by Franklin Township police for an incident that occurred along SR2015. Police responded to a report of a gun incident. Strohl was one of three charged in the incident but was not the one with the weapon. When questioned by police he gave a false statement, but later admitted to police he had lied.Webb placed him on probation for a year.Lisa M. Bowman, 39, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of DUI. She was arrested on May 1 along Long Run Road in Franklin Township by state police. Given a test, the result was .13BAC.Webb sentenced her to serve five days to six months in jail, pay a fine of $300, get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and license suspended for a year. On a motor vehicle code violation she was fined $25 and costs.She will begin the sentence on Dec. 20 and serve two days and then Dec. 27 and serve three days.Evrin D. Kalkan, 26, of Lehighton, pleaded two pending cases. In the first case to one count of unauthorized use of an automobile for an incident on Sept. 9 in Franklin Township in which Linda Lewis is the victim. He took her Honda Passport without permission, township police said.The second charge was criminal attempt-robbery. It was for an incident on Sept. 5 at the Square One Market in Franklin Township. He entered the store with his hand in one pocket like he had a weapon and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk fled to the rear of the store and Kalkan left without getting anything.Webb deferred sentencing and ordered a PSI.Derek L. Frable, 27, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count each of DUI and driving while under suspension-DUI related. He was arrested on June 27 by state police along SR209 in Towamensing Township. Given a test, the result was .14BAC.On the DUI charge Webb sentenced him to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, get a D&A evaluation, and license suspended for a year.The the driving under suspension he was sentenced to 90 days in jail, a fine of $1,000, and another year suspension. The terms run consecutively, Webb ruled.He will serve the prison term on consecutive three-day weekends beginning Jan. 9 at 9 a.m.Tiffany Lynn Ott, 29, of Kunkletown, pleaded to one count of DUI. She was arrested on April 30 along Little Gap Road, in Lower Towamensing Township, by state police. Given a test, the result was .21BAC.Webb placed her on probation for six months and ordered she pay a fine of $300 and get a D&A evaluation.Gerald Vincent Niehoff, 29, of Lehighton, pleaded guilty to one count each of theft and driving while under suspension-DUI related. He was arrested on Oct. 3 by state police in Lower Towamensing Township.Troopers said he stole a five gallon can of gas from the property of Ronald Behler. He was later stopped by troopers who learned he was under suspension.On the suspension charge Webb sentenced him to serve 60 days in jail, a fine of $500, one year license suspension and get a D&A evaluation . On the theft count he was sentenced to time served (39 days) to one year in jail. The jail terms run consecutively.Alex John Rehrig, 22, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of recklessly endangering another person. He was arrested on June 4 by Franklin Township police along SR2015. Police responded to a reported gun incident and found Rehrig with a weapon in a vehicle. The gun was a shotgun with the barrel sawed off. The weapons charge was dropped in a plea bargain.Webb placed him on probation for a year.Ryan Michael Eckhart, 25, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count each of DUI and resisting arrest. He was arrested for an incident on Oct. 23, 2009, along 57 Road in Towamensing Township.State police said Eckhart was involved in a crash in which his car left the road and landed in a field. He attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by troopers. When troopers attempted to take him into custody he resisted and had to be physically subdued.On the DUI charge he was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300, D&A evaluation and zero tolerance imposed on D&A use.On the resisting count he was sentenced to serve 30 days to one year in jail. He begins the jail term on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m.Jarred Dillman, 20, of Palmerton, pleaded guilty to one count of receiving stolen property. He was arrested for an incident that occurred on Aug. 22, 2009, involving Frances Thamarus as the victim and the theft of a 1994 Ford Mustang.Webb deferred sentencing and ordered a PSI.David Dilcher, 37, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on May 2 along SR895 in East Penn Township by state police during a vehicle stop. Found in the car was a marijuana pipe.Webb placed him on probation for a year.All defendants must also pay court costs and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
