No. 9 Mine Christmas

ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/TIMES NEWS Seventy five years ago, Santa Claus broke his ankle when he landed in an empty coal car at the LCN No. 9 Colliery in Lansford while trying to parachute from a bi-plane into Lansford High School Stadium where a capacity crowd was waiting to welcome him to the Panther Valley. As the plane was flying over the stadium, the pilot was testing the winds when St. Nick fell prematurely out of the plane and he missed the stadium by 400 feet or so. He was taken to the Coaldale State Hospital (now St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital) with many of the children in tears. This year, Santa arrived by sled to the mine's museum, where the children had their picture taken with Santa for a donation to the mine. Children were given hot chocolate, cookies and a candy cane. Elf Holly Frick, 15, participates in holiday craft-making with Dalicia, 3, and Michael Leon, 5 during the mine's holiday event.
