Thorpe boys, Tamaqua girls win titles

The Jim Thorpe boys and the Tamaqua girls captured their respective team titles at the 'Canes Invitational to highlight Saturday's local sports card.

GIRLS TENNISSalisbury-TamaquaThe Lady Raiders fell to Salisbury, 4-1.The sole win for Tamaqua came at number two singles, where Vanessa Wagner scored a three-set win over Beth Fritzinger, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.The doubles tandem of Deana DeWire and Laine Confer had a tough loss at number two doubles, where they dropped the pro set decision, 6-8.SINGLESMcKenna Best (S) d. Deana DeWire/Laine Confer 8-6.GIRLS VOLLEYBALLPleasant Valley ClassicThe Lady Bears took second place in the tournament held at their own home court, the second Annual Pocono Classic on Saturday. In pool play, the Bears placed first, beating Western Wayne 25-8, 25-14. They also took down St. Hubert's 25-18, 25-13, and also tied Quakertown 25-15, 19-25 and Tunkhannock, 25-13, 19-25.In the semis, the locals defeated Easton 25-10, 26-24 and then fell in the finals to Tunkhannock, 26-28, 25-17 and 9-15.Individually, Brittni Cumberland had a total 59 assists, four blocks, 10 kills, 12 digs and six aces. Kayla Dorney had 25 kills, 22 digs, ten aces and four blocks. MacKinzie Dorney totalled 33 digs, 13 kills and three aces, while teammate Crystal Cambria had eight kills, eight blocks, and four aces and Breanna Joseph had 14 kills and 12 blocks.Panther Valley-HalifaxChrissy Micholik had 11 kills, 13 assists and seven service points to help Panther Valley gain a 25-12, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory over Halifax.Amy Yusella added 10 kills while Stephanie Kachelries contributed seven kills, 14 service points and three aces.The Panthers (2-2; 2-1) also received seven kills and five blocks from Deanna Focht and 21 digs from Lyndsay Kusko. Ellen Krajcir and Celene Yelito each chipped in with eight service points.BOYS SOCCERMoravian-PalmertonThe Bombers dropped a 8-3 decision to Moravian Aacdemy.MA received a hat trick from George Tsirukis. Taylor Brown had two goals.For Palmerton, Nate Binder scored a hat trick of his own, tallying three scores in the second half to make his team's effort respectable. Spencer Shigo, Adam Berger and Sam Oberlander all had assists.The winners outshot the locals 29-14 in the game, with PHS goalie Brett Snyder stopping 11 shots.Northwestern-FleetwoodJames Hoover scored on a direct kick in overtime to give Northwestern a 1-0 non-league victory over Fleetwood.Hoover's goal came with 3:44 left in the extra session.Fleetwood finished with a 14-7 advantage in shots, but Tiger goalie Talon Williams made nine saves to record the shutout.Salisbury-Jim ThorpeThe Olympians struggled with the hot feet of the Falcons and eventually dropped the 7-0 non-league decision.Sean Baker had three goals in the first half to get his team out of the gates early. Teammate Sean Adams added two goals.Jim Thorpe goalie Justin Kaminsky stopped 17 shots for the losing effort.Pleasant Valley-LibertyPleasant Valley rolled to a 3-0 non-league victory over Liberty.Alex Monsour scored the first half goal to give the Bears the early lead, while Malik Krcic and Jeremy Curatola scored second half insurance goals. Travis Zilmer, Jack Wathen and Ricky Forte assisted on the scores.Liberty actually outshot the Bears 12-10, but PV goalie AJ Werkheiser stopped six shots in goal to record the shutout win.PV improves to 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the MVC, while Liberty drops to 1-4.GIRLS SOCCERTamaqua-Blue MountainThe Lady Raiders dropped their first game of the season as Blue Mountain posted a 3-0 victory.The Lady Eagles got two goals from Shanelle Koch.Blue Mountain outshot the locals 14-9 in the game with Tamaqua goalkeeper Chey Bates stopping 11 shots in the losing effort.Tamaqua gained a split with a 1-0 win in the JV game on a goal by Rachel Jones.Pottsville-Jim ThorpePottsville exploded for four first half goals and went on to defeat Jim Thorpe, 4-2, in a non-league game.Cailin Liscinski scored both of the Olympians goals. Her first goal was unassisted and came with 18:42 remaining in the first half. Liscinski's second goal came with just over nine minutes left in the game and was assisted by Cat Condly.Pottsville had a 14-13 edge in goals. Jim Thorpe goalies Condly and Chelsea Smelas both made three saves.CROSS COUNTRYCentaur InvitationalFour area teams took part in DeSales University's Centaur Invitational.In the girls meet, Northwestern's eighth place finish was the best showing. The Tigers had 263 points to finish well behind champion Downingtown East (62) in the 22-team field. Pleasant Valley finished ninth with 302 points, Northern Lehigh was 19th with 525 points, and Palmerton was 21st with 536 points.Pleasant Valley's Samantha Klingel was the top area finisher in 31st place. Haley Yost's 34th place finish led Northwestern, Andrea Stevko topped Palmerton with a 66th place finish, and Samantha Corcoran led Northern Lehigh with a 78th place finish.In the boys meet, Holy Ghost Prep had 69 points to beat 27 other teams. Northwestern's 10th place finish led local teams. The Tigers had 322 points. Pleasant Valley had 535 points to finish 18th, Palmerton was 22nd with 552 points, and Northern Lehigh was 23rd with 558 points.Individually, Tyler Stelmack of Northwestern had a solid 15th place finish to lead area runners. Dan Rose of Pleasant Valley was 21st, Austin Danish of Northern Lehigh finished 53rd, and Kevin Seemiller of Palmerton was 79th.'Canes InvitationalThe Jim Thorpe boys and the Tamaqua girls captured their respective team titles Saturday at the 'Canes Invitational on Schuylkill Haven High School's 3.1 mile course.The Olympians edged North Schuylkill 64-66 for the boys championship, while Tamaqua placed fourth with 90 points.North Schuylkill's Brendan Shearn won the boys' race with a course record time of 16:42.Josh Williams (seventh), Christian Fields (ninth) and Matt Curran (12th) led the Olympians, while the Blue Raiders' top finishers were Joe Rudy (eighth), Phil Christman (11th) and Jordan Frank (13th).In the girls' race, Carroll won her third 'Canes title with a time of 19:57 as the Lady Raiders repeated as team champs with 22 points to outpace second place North Schuylkill's 51. Jim Thorpe was fourth with 112.Schuyler Schmidt (third), Colleen Rorke (fourth), Jessica Leiby (sixth), Cecily Kohlmeir (eight) had top 10 finishes for the Raiders.Erin Bucci placed 11th and Catheryn Condly 12th to lead Thorpe, while Panther Valley's Sindle Griffiths placed 18th.FROSH FOOTBALLMarian-LehightonAnthony Agosti and Sam Budusky both scored a pair of touchdowns to lead Marian to a 48-6 victory over Lehighton.Frank Nietz and Sam Tomlin both added touchdown runs for the Colts while Calvin Talbott hit Nico Agosti with a pass for the other Marian TD.The Colts also got two-point conversions from Tomlin, Budusky and Anthony Agosti.
